Oblivion, yes, but which Overhaul?

Hi there guys, a lot of time passed since the last I played Oblivion and I finally came to the conclusion to start with Oblivion again.

At the moment I'm searching for a stable Oblivion Overhaul.

Can someone recommend me an Oblivion overhaul which still gets updated or did all current overhauls get abandoned (heard that the creator of OOO isnt working anymore and that Francesco's PI hasn't been updated for a long time)?

I appreciate any help.

Thanks!

The overhauls, for the most part, stopped being worked on not because they weren't stable, but because they became much too overreaching. They havn't been updated much because there really hasn't been anything to update with that didn't end up duplicating what was in other mods. Again, the issue of being too much of everything.

I've used both OOO and Frans in the past, and what it really boils down to is what sort of experience you are wanting.

OOO is nice in that it creates some harder dungeon and world spawns which are death at low levels, and adds some variance everywhere else, but once those harder things are killed, there aren't any others running around. Although the new dungeons are a welcome addition, many of them, in particular the conjurer ones, can become just too much of a clusterf*ck to really do anything other than jump up on a ledge and spam an aoe.

Frans is similar in that it allows for a bigger variety of spawns, but approaches things as being more leveled around the player instead of making areas which are specifically higher level.

I tried out MMM awhile ago with frans, and it only ended up screwing over my game. I would suspect that it has improved since then, but still wouldn't recommend it.

If I was going to play again and didn't care about a cluttered data folder, I'd likely use frans with midas magic, and just leave it to that as far as large mods go. If anything seems to be lacking, I could probably just find other mods to fill those holes, or use wyrebash to merge leveled lists if needed.

At the moment however, I'm just using my own mod which removes the level component of deciding what spawns, but makes use of leveled creatures that are specially doctored to maintain a certain level of difficulty. Given that most of the time I played, I never really leveled beyond 30, so never saw most of the higher spawns or equipment under OOO, it's actually a bit refreshing to go down the road at level 5, and feel that bit of uneasiness seeing an ogre in the way ahead, and trying to find a way around without being seen. Or that sudden shock of jumping down from a ledge on top of a mountain lion, and getting mauled. It's not a friendly world, but that's the way I like it. Havn't gotten around to changing NPCs though, so guards tend to get pwned badly... Still fun though.

OOO is most certainly still worked on and is IMO the best choice for a single overhaul, since it does not only overhaul nearly every aspect of the game for the better, it also adds lots of new items and creatures, several large quests and lots and lots of small things that add to the immersion.

FCOM is based mostly on OOO, but also adds the monsters from MMM as well as much stuff from Frans, WarCry and Bob's Armoury.

Personally, I use OOO.

Vagrant is correct in the fact that the conjurer dungeons in OOO will serve you your ass on a silver platter with a side order of salad, but it can be awesome fun training for an experienced swordsman, and I don't mean upgrading your skills in game and going up in level. I'm talking about real experience - I used to be the kind of player where I run in, soak up all the damage that's thrown at me, and hope against hope that I stab the enemy enough to kill him before he kills me. I'm still working on that, but now I will actually memorize where the enemies are behind me so that I won't inadvertently backpedal into one, use deadly reflex to duck under a particularly powerful strike, and when running forward I can now dodge around lighting bolts and other magic, often getting any pursuers behind me zapped instead.

Beyond that, OOO is my favorite because it creates a mostly static world, wher if you go into a dungeon at level one and find it too hard, it makes sense that when you go back in fifteen levels you'll be able to beat it with relative ease.

MMM is nice if you want to face hordes. There's not much more to say about it, and the installation of it is complicated enough that when I did my reinstall and tried to load it up all the MMM creatures are now invisible, and throw fireballs at me (A Minotaur where I can only see its eyes and it's throwing 10 damage flares at me? no thanks) so I abandoned that one

I can't give you an honest opinion on frans because I have failed repeatedly to install it properly. whatever.

FCOM is awesome. It's a bit of a bear to install though. You really need to follow the installation guide closely. Once you have it properly installed it's amazingly stable.

Another megamod in the works is Waalx. It might be a while before it's officially released though.

Couldn't agree more. I am using FCOM at the moment and it works great, but yes it takes time to download all the components you want for it and also to get your load order set straight, but there is wonderful utilities that make it much simpler than it used to be. WAC is unreal and even in it's testing stages is still worth a try. Waalx is a modding freak of nature, I mean that in the best way possible.
