SavageArtistry
how can i make the mod work if its a RAR file? i dl some mods and they are and i move them to the data folder but i cannot activate them through data files. any helP? new to theses forums so go easy on the noob even though i am sure it is a total noob question It's an archive file just like .zip and .7z. You just need something to open it with. I like 7zip because it handles lots of formats and it's totally free. I think you can get it in the utilities section here or you can get it on the website at http://www.7-zip.org/ You need to unzip your mod, then place the resulting folders and esp file in the data directory. Usually it'll ask to overwrite folders in Data\Meshes and Data\Textures. You will want to say yes to these prompts. The esp file is what gets checked in the launcher. Edit: Forgot to add, you may need WinRar if it's a single mod split into parts (a spanned archive) that need to be assembled. I've found that 7zip doesn't handle that so well, but it's good for just about everything else.

ipegot
little rude there? :PNot everyone is computer literate. Its one thing to be able to find websites via google or the like but not everyone will know what a rar file is, for instance.
ThePearl
little rude there? :PNot everyone is computer literate. Its one thing to be able to find websites via google or the like but not everyone will know what a rar file is, for instance. Well I actually think it is strange that people don't know about .rar formats... I think 7zip or winrar should be included in windows... (if it isn't already in Vista or Windows 7, but I use XP)

bben46
Welcome to TesNexus. fortunately not all of our members are so inconsiderate. I have sent them a warning. It is NOT ok to bash the noob. Remember you were once a noob also. Consider this a warning.bben46, Moderator All mods are downloaded in a compressed format, most in either .rar or .7z. These are compressed files to save space and download faster. Many computers will not accept downloads in .exe (executable) format for security reasons. Both 7-zip and winrar will extract (unzip) just about any compressed file. However I prefer 7-zip - it's free - really free, not try before you buy like winrar, not buy first like winzip. And it is available right here on TesNexus. http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15579 Run the self installing file that you download and it should set up your computer to use 7-zip to extract all compressed (zipped) files like .7z .rar .zip and many others. Then after it is installed, when you download a mod, click on the mod just as if you would a program and the 7-zip will run asking where you want to unzip to. I have a set of help files for people who are not computer geeks and are new to mods. They include downloading, extracting (unzipping) installing and activating mods. I have included a simple mod to practice on and instructions for installing and using 7-zip. If you are interested, click on the highlighted link below to be taken to the site where they are kept. I recommend starting with #1 and working your way through them. http://s1.zetaboards.com/TheStormRavenLibrary/forum/256092/ If you use them I would appreciate some feedback as to what needs improvement and what works for you. Please be honest and don't worry about hurting my feelings with criticism as I have a thick skin.
