Combat and Weapons

After playing Oblivion, I found that the combat mechanics are fairly boring. Combos are severely limited. The alteration of attacks to stagger or disarm aren't very impressive either. All fighting is just press the attack button until the enemy dies. Not to mention that the weapons are severly limited too, between bows, blades, and bludgeons.

I was thinking if there are some ways to make fighting in Oblivion more entertaining. In many combat games like Devil May Cry, attacks can be alternate. For instance, pause in the middle of a combo and the attack changes, along with knock downs and launching enemies into the air. I also wouldn't mind the fighting mechanics where it is possible to alternate between blocking and fighting in combat.

I know that there is the DMC Stylish mod, but I was not sure if that fulfills what I want changed in Oblivion fighting.

You're not lying about that. But what I meant is that in Oblivion, pressing the attack button rapidly usually gets the job done.

But I played a Devil May Cry game on PC, and I learned from past games of the franchise that by changing the speed on how the button is pressed, a different combo can be formed. Sure, Oblivion has an alternating side, foward, and back attack; but all it does is push enemies aside. I has hoping for combos to be longer than a three-hit attack, possibly some attacks that launch enemies skyward or knock them down, and hopefully find a way to widen attack range so it is possible to hit targets in an arc than just in front of you.

Albeit the magnificent work from modders at enhancing the Oblivion's combat system you must remember the game is a RPG or an action RPG and thus not designed from scratch to be a fight game. Just remember Oblivion is about quests, NPC interaction and of course fighting, the later never was it's primary concern (yet those mods vastly changes it for better and we are very grateful toward the authors). Strangely, you have precise ideas about what you expect in a combat and didn't see it already exist and is clearly described in mods that are since ever in the top lists.

People may argue that its got a 3rd person mode, but you are right it is designed more for a first person view, I've never been keen on all smash and no teeth kind of fighting games, but it is true that Oblivion lacks alot in basic physics....

*treds on a cup and it spins one million times befor landing.* Do that in RL and i'll be impresed ;)

I had the same issue with OB. I found that raising the difficulty forced me to not just run around slashing everything on sight, but to think about what i was fighting and how to effectively fight it.

I was big on using fire-enchanted swords on everything, but raising the difficulty made that strategy completely useless on some characters. Slashing away on enemies, enemies that could block and kill you on 1 or 2 hits, was something i stopped doing after a few times.

Raising it not only made OB more entertaining, but it also made every kill a lot more satisfying.

It's a first person RPG though.

Bethesda should abandon those worthless consoles and make full use of the PCs advantages.

Throw some phisics in combat and you'll have the best swordfighting game of the modern era.

Agreed that they should abandon consoles, or at least make it for PC first, then dumb it down for consoles.

That said, its more of an action adventure game than RPG.

The RPG elements are so thin its unbelivable.

The primary 'roleplay' in vanilla consists of choosing if you want to join a faction and work your way up to lead it. Then the next one, then the next one......

You would have thought the combat in Morrowind to be really boring if you don't like the combat in Oblivion. When I got Oblivion, I was struck by how much like a Nintendo game the combat was, as opposed to virtual dice being rolled as you symbolically swing your weapon. The combat really sucks you in! You have to be on your toes and pay attention to how you work the controls.

They could make the combat better, but we all should remember how awesome it already is. Remember games like "Pong" and "Pack-Man?"
