Thread Necromancy

I would like to know what constitutes thread necromancy, 1 month 3 months what. I read up on the old topics and alot are left with a question that never gets answered yet i dont want to answer it because ill get hit with a warning and possibly get myself booted. I find it a bit sad that even if someoen doesnt get an answer within 2 months or whatever it is that i cant answer that without gettin blasted. and if i start a new topic on it ill get " this has been posted before, locked ". what about those that have the tough quesations but dont get answers. where do they go.

anywhere ive read on site it says.. past an acceptable time.. what is that time?

i have already answered one very old post with a PM, and i want to help out if can but do i have to PM everyone.

basicly id like to post an answer... if i know it so that somoene can look it up and there it is. and yes i read the above topics before posting this.

yet ive seen plenty of those old topics EVEN with a good answer or a final answer with the end of the line "thats thread necromancy, locked"

The reason is a lot of these old threads are made by people who will never read them again. So by the time months have passed, it's likely the person has either found a solution, given up, or won't return to this forum again. So it's not accomplishing anything but digging up the old thread and wasting our time clicking the link expecting a new thread, not one that died months ago.

Peregrine is right but could have added one other point;

If a problem is unanswered and is something that others are interested in, the chances are high there will be another thread about the same subject that will have been answered. Very few points of significance remain unanswered on these forums.

There is no exact definition as to what constitutes necromancy. Threads fall broadly into three categories. By far the most are from individuals asking about specific points. Peregrine's response applies; after a couple of weeks these players must have moved on. Usually we allow answers up to a month after the last post without comment. Then there are debates. These may be left open forever if people want to add to them but some cease to become topical and replies become repetitious. These can be locked in certain circumstances. Finally there are permanently open threads like 'how old are you?, what is the scariest monster etc.'

If you come up with a fanastic discovery or revolutionary solution to a problem there are pinned threads you can add to or you can start a new one. For instance if you can tell me how to get my existing computer to run Oblivion by tweaking it with two bus tickets and a can of cola I shall be forever in your debt.

When Oblivion is available all threads will be new and there will be ample opportunity to post helpful solutions and information then.

It is actually stated in the forum rules thread, stated as "Posting Donts" at the top of the forum, and in the rules and regulations forum as "ALL NEWBIES READ BEFORE POSTING". I thought it was kind of hard to miss:

Basically if it's a month or more old and you don't have anything new to add, then don't post. If you have something that, if posted, would continue the discussion, then post. ^^
