superlarrio
i dont know a whole lot about the technical aspect about computers so i figure this is a good place to ask my question. with games like this and oblivion and others that are heavily modded im starting to run out of harddrive space. my question is if i install a game onto a harddrive other then my "c" drive will it effect the mods? i know installin a mod it goes into my c/program files/bethesda/fallout/data folder, but, does that individual mod have a path that tells the game its in the 'C" drive? if i install fallout on my"d" drive partition will mods still work if i put them in my d/fallout/data...or whatever the folder would be named? i know for a new texture to work it has to go herec/program files/bethesda/fallout/data/textures...is that only because the game itself is installed on the c drive? if i install the game on say my d drive, would the texture work if it went here?d/fallout/data/textures... i hope i was clear enough to get an answer. thanks in advance
Skotte
To tell the truth, it's recommended that Fallout 3 not be in "program files" especially with Vista. My Fallout 3 is installed as "D:\Games\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3"
csb
To answer the question about drives ... yes, Fallout3 expects content to be in the /Data directory of its install. By default, this consists of the .bsa resource archives that Fallout3 uses, the Fallout3 master file (Fallout3.esm) and the DLC master files, if they are installed. There are ways to bypass this ... in theory. But I think that any bypass method would probably induce more problems than solve. If hard drive space (or partition space) is an issue, you'll have to address that by either: (a) getting a larger hard drive or (b) re-sizing your partitions. Option (b) will mean a complete re-installation of your OS and all your applications, unless you are using software that lets you dynamically re-size partitions. Option (a) would mean re-installation of Fallout3 on the new hard drive. Personally, I'd go with option (a). If you are that cramped for space, you need a new/additional drive anyway for more than just Fallout3.
phoneyLogic
All the texture, mashes files and so on are relative to the data folder. That's why an fully adressed texture path looks like this:textures\armors\etc\could go on If you install your game to D:\Games\Fallout your data folder will be in D:\Games\Fallout\Data <------ ... so you'll have to place you textures in there
superlarrio
thanks for the help guys, you answered my questions completely. i have plenty of hard drive space of my 'D' partition as i havent used it at all and divided my whole harddrive into two equal parts when i installed my OS. ive just been using only the 'C' drive and as of now im down to 30gb's on it. now i know in the future i can install games on my 'D' drive with no problems with mods working. thanks again!!!
