NMA: Purist Fanboys and Jerks?

I recently visited No Mutants Allowed, one of the oldest Fallout series fan sites. Being a fan of the series I figured I'd find a lot of cool information and articles about all the games, things that would entertain and inform the Fallout fanatic in me. Well, it turns out that I couldn't get very far into searching for such.

I went immediately to the Fallout 3 articles section (as it's my favorite installment in the series) and was seriously disappointed with what I found. The impression that they gave me was of an angry child who assumed they wouldn't like the new flavor of ice cream their mother brought home from the store and instead of trying it to find out and giving it a fair chance, threw it all around the kitchen and spit it out on the carpet, then walked around telling everyone they saw that it tasted like "doggy poo" (Ok, I guess that's not the greatest analogy but you get the idea). I have come to the conclusion that NMA is basically a site for Interplay's Fallout fanboy purists. According to what I saw there this is the impression I got: "Fallout 1&2 were awesome and Fallout 3 sucks because Bethesda sucks because we said so, so neaaahh!"

Am I wrong in this assessment or have other's here seen the same thing there at NMA? If I am mistaken then maybe I will give them another chance, but as it stands, I don't think I will be returning to the site any time in the near or distant future.

For some reason your post made me laugh. I guess it's becouse you are beeing honest by saying what you said. I'm not a member of that site, I never even been there. I have F3 and I play it, it's a great game. I'm not sure what advice I should give you as you most definetly have more experience with this game than I do, but as far as I'm concerned if I don't like a place, I leave. If you find something usefull there, don't hesitate and grab/read it, but beeing a member of a comunity that you don't realy like ain't something I'd do. I don't know if this helps, but after reading your post, I had to reply.

Cheers,

Pushkatu!

Pushkatu, Well I was interested in becoming a member of their site until I read a few articles there. Like you, if I don't like a place I leave it and tend not to return. I am just asking if I am alone in this opinion of NMA or if I am just being unreasonable. I do appreciate your reply though, maybe one day, if someone does point to something useful there I will take a look at it but otherwise I am going to steer clear of that hot mess of FO3 negativity :P .

Floydian1, I got that exact same feeling. I just don't understand it really since I like all the games for what they are. Just because Fallout 3 is made by a different developer and in a different style doesn't make it any better or any worse than Fallout 1&2. It's just different and I personally prefer it because it suits my personal tastes for first person perspective games. That doesn't mean I am going to go around calling Interplay's original Fallout games crap every chance I get like they do to FO3 over at NMA.

I posted a Fallout 3 screenshot thread in the Fallout 3 section and was promptly ripped to pieces. From what I saw (haven't been back since) there is a pathological hatred of Fallout 3 there.

Looks like you are not the only one after all. I guess they formed a group of F3 haters. Dunno and don't realy care. I hope that you find what you're looking for.

  • 2 weeks later...

I go to NMA every now and then for stuff on the older Fallout games (i still play them sometimes). Heck if i could find it, i'd be playing Wasteland (the old text based game Fallout was the 'spiritual' successor of). However from everything i've seen on NMA, they are SERIOUS haters of all things FO3. Not a big community guy myself, the Nexus is the only site i post on with any regularity and i think a big part of that is the actual 'community' feel to the Nexus. Not sure if thats the kinda review-ish thingy of NMA your looking for, but its my 2 cents.

Meanwhile this is a little too old styled for me

Btw: Maybe there will be a Wasteland 2 ...

Agreed

I do play Fallout 1 right at the moment and I enjoy it. Sure this is really quite another game play than in FO3, basicly just because it is 100% RPG and 0% FPS. But hey, Bethesda did a fairly good job in my feel. :whistling:

Mate... Don't go to that horrid site, it's... Not worth it. Really, the amount of pointless whining and fan-hating (mental image of people in robes lynching an officefan) makes my head spin. It's like you need someone outside their site giving away cake, lemonade and loving hugs for when you stumble out there with your fath in man down the drain. They most deffinetly fits the description in the thread-name and then some. Now, enjoying Fallout 1 & 2 but not 3 doesn't make you a fanboy/jerk/other mean things, but these guys qualify. However, the chance of a new Fallout-game even meeting their contradictionary and unreasonable dempands is as good as none. Really, leave them there in a perpetual state of disappointment for something they never tried and whining about how much everything used to be better in the past. All while the developers concentrate on pleasing us casual scubs and shallow kiddies who actually buy their games.

So; stay away from No Mutants Allowed, since people with any sence of civility doesn't seem to be allowed entry either.

(Of course, there COULD be some nice folks in there, burried deep beneath all the small-minded, nostalgia-blinded rubbish that coats every surface like some kind of spitefull deep sea sediment.
