Good, Bad Or Crazy Like A Fox?

Hey guys. Sorry if this already has been discussed, I'm new in here..

Are you going to play bad, good or just plain crazy in Oblivion?

Even though it's just virtual, I always get moral problems with playing bad guys - this doesn't really diminish as games get more and more lifelike.

This has resulted in me playing as goodygoody in almost every RPG - but listening to all that "eternal hero", "saviour" and "bringer of light"-bullocks can be pretty harrowing as well.

So that's why I'm thinking of playing an utter male without a father in oblivion. Redguard/Orc lots of weapons+armour, and a penchant for pain (of others, of course). Basically, a real swell guy.

Don't get me wrong, though, I'm a little fluffy, squishy bunny in real life - so will I stand the test - the first time I'm asked to kill an innocent, or to push a sweet old grandma over a cliff... will I have the nerves of fire? Hmm...

So what have you thought about?

I know exactly what you mean. I'm still a bit undecided as to where my main character will fall. I do intend on creating a savage raider type, but that will be more for kicks than anything else.

Oh and welcome to the forums by the way.

Haha yeah I have problems with playing evil characters too sometimes. I'll always go through a game being a goody-two-shoes first, then maybe screw around with an evil character afterwards, just for the different gaming experience. I doubt it'll be any different with Oblivion. :P

Yeah that's pretty much how I do it too. But not this time, I'm currently sharpening my halberd of pure evil, practising my mean look, and bracing myself for turning down requests to fetch lost cats etc.

The only other game I played bad in was KotorI - I've never played it in a more freeroaming world, which I bet is an experience; so here goes (.. well, when Oblivion comes out anyway :glare: )

My characters tend to be mercenary-like, you know, doing what benefits me the most. I've tried playing pure good or evil characters in MW, but found them too extreme. Payment is the most important thing to me when doing quests. Of course, I play different characters with different motives, for roleplayings sake...

My choice for Oblivion would be a stealthy rogue, not good or bad, but ugly :P

So a little rundown on what skills n' stuff I'm thinking of giving my character (because I really should be studying, you understand.)

I hate magic, and I only sneak around when stealing and so on, never sneak around enemies - so a melee powerhouse: I'm thinking

Heavy Armour (E)

Block (E)

... big bad armoured fiend.

Athletics (S)

Acrobatics (S)

... because from what I read the skill system is the same, which means these will ensure good level ups...

Sneak (A)

Security (A)

... because there's no better thing in a freeroaming virtual world, than having the feeling that you're somewhere you shouldn't be.

and the last one should be a weapons skill...

See I always go for blade; for one particular reason, which I have heard others state as well. I've never seen a fantasy RPG that didn't favour blades in the sense that ALL the best magic weapons were blades; so, from a power-point of view, you would be foolish not to choose blade. Has anybody heard anything to the contrary in this department?

And, as I understand it, creating magic items is reserved for pretty hardcore spellcasters right? Which means that you can't go around the blade-favouring this way... hmm...

Any comments, critics - not in the least about my idea with athletics/acrobatics ensuring levelling ups?

My characters pretty much react according to my mood, I found that if I try to play a character either as a bunny hugger or a sadistic fighter with no morals, or even a mercenary the game becomes like filling in a magazine questionaire - meaningless.

If she's hungry and needs food or money she'll do what she has to do and live with it.

So I cannot really say what type I'll play but types of characters will only come after I've played through at least once, to vary game experience.

The whole point of playing for me isnt doing it right or wrong or about being good or bad. All or any of them will probably be some aspect of me.

See why I call Morrowind therapy? Maby this is called crazy as a fox then...

Hmm, you make a good point. I recognize the part about feeling like you're filling out a magazine questionaire; if you've set your sights firmly on goodygoody or evil, every dialogue choice in the game pretty much gives itself.

That's why I've also found myself playing the chaotic good-do what you please, but still the right thing-independent-loner-ranger-type character (a character I suspect we've all played at one time or another o_O )

I've also done the paladin thing-"greater good" type thing.

And while I agree that choosing the chaotic evil marauder path pretty much gives a certain dialogue path, I'm thinking maybe more of a lawfull evil character, one that knows how to sweettalk and when to pick your battles and when to look like the hero... hmm..

I always look at games with alignments as a type of test on my own sanity... I chose options that I myself would chose in real life...I have concluded that I'm a fairly decent person :P I always try to help people out,... Like in morrowind my character is pretty much me... minus the red eyes of course... well maybe not ;)
