Your thoughts please

I am trying to get some people's opinions on what the best computer out there is, for someone on a budget, say less that 1200 dollars, that you could go out and buy from the store, and that would be able to run oblivion, full modded, with mods the like of Qarl's retexture pack 3 and not have any problems as far as FPS.

Would a low end Ailenware be the way to go? For instance I saw one today for under 1200,

What are your thoughts,

Thank you

Simon

If you have the know how, you should build your own computer.

If you don't, you should list the specs of the computer that you are looking at, or provide a link to it so that we can see it.

Also try at the System Advisor. They usually know where to get your stuff and might help you with a build.

or provide a link to it so that we can see it.
Indeed, most sales are useless but some aren't...

Ugh, you'll get an ALRIGHT store bought computer for $1200 ....they'll make it seem like it's the godliest thing ever though. I never suggest buying a pre-built computer, especially Dell. (they bought Alienware you know.....) My friend swears on HPs though, he's never had a problem with them. But, yeah, I don't like pre-built systems. But if you're going to get one, make sure there is atleast 4GB of RAM in it and it's a 64 bit OS (Windows 7 preferably). 32 bit is obsolete and many many things work with 64 bit...the only things that don't are off the wall brand wireless cards and oddball software. If they give you the dumb dog look about anything, leave...they should know what they are selling. Best Buy has a great reputation for that lol. Don't go in there not knowing what you're gonna buy, that screams "fresh meat" for them people lol. My dad drags me everywhere for electronics now as he got the royal screw job on a DVD camcorder.

My mom way back in 2000 went to buy a computer....she comes home with a $700 E-machine with a 533Mhz Celeron!! *sigh* Pentium 4s were out by then....*pulls hair out* I built her a new system recently. She's very happy for the $300 she had to spend ;).

Also make sure that the CPU is good. Make sure, for Pete's sake, that it's not either a Pentium Dual Core, a Celeron, or an AMD Turion. Those are the low end pieces of crap, and believe me you'll know it when you play a game. Also watch out for them selling you one with a low end Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon 64 x2. I haven't checked the computers they have available as of late in the stores....but I'm sure they still have some old ones they are trying to sell for the same price that they were 5 years ago.

I've built many a few computers, mostly AMD systems as they are a lot cheaper than Intel.

The best computer is the one that comes out two days after you buy a new one.

Building your own is better than a pre built name brand. they are built using the cheapest components they can get away with.

Dell is famous for using the cheapest power supply possible - that makes it difficult to upgrade to a more powerful graphics card. They like to use non standard power supplies too, making it even more difficult to upgrade.

As has been said the best machine you can get is the one you build yourself provided you are up for the occasional aggravation. My friend bought the AlienWare machine about a year ago and the thing is HUGE and weighs a ton. It looks like the front end of a riding lawn mower. It does run well and looks sharp, but I don't know what changes Dell might have made to the design. Barring that we have had our two HP machines for 5 and 6 years now and they have been very faithful. We were going to get HP's again this time around, but they seem to be beset by extreme quality control issues with at least the machine that we wanted: HP Forum Board. In looking around for an alternative we found that Velocity Micro had a very respected reputation and their website was very impressive. They will hand build your machine to order and, in our case, offered free shipping and they paid our sales tax for us. I cannot say how good the machines actually are myself as they are currently building our two at this very moment. They do offer a couple of machines at around a thousand dollars American with a good choice of components. As I said I cannot vouch for them at this time, but you might want to look into them. I hope that this helps.

Ok here is a link and I am just curious what you guys think are the pro's and con's of a buy like this. I am apprehensive on building a computer. I do not know what it is but I can tear apart and work on cars, but the thought of doing that with a computer frankly scares me a little. Lol.

hehe it's like Legos, that's what my boyfriend always says. :P

that's alright...too bad it comes with DDR2 800 but 8 GB is nice.

I was just looking at this one and saying how pretty good of a price this was

new ATI card in it, DDR3 1333 :) yummy

guess it all depends on what your preference is, I'm an AMD person  Intel just seems overpriced to me. You can't build yourself a good Intel system without spending a good chunk of change on the motherboard and CPU it seems and with AMD you can get the mid range CPU and overclock it to the expensive one rather easily. I have my 5000+ dual core overclocked on a mid range motherboard to their highest end dual core at the time, the 6400+....sucks up a lot of juice though...125W :P

Remember, Oblivion is "old" lol by computer standards...about anything will play it now...unless you have a single core with 1GB of RAM and a really old graphics card haha. Even the low end graphics cards can play it to some extent. Either one of those would be incredibly godly for Oblivion and would play Crysis rather nice too :)
