PerroLoco53218
I've been playing FO3 for about a year & now FO3+BOS & PL for 6 weeks or so... I should have waited on the DLCs until the Game of the Year Edition, which includes the original Fallout 3 game as well as all 5 of the downloadable content packs. I still don't have OA, The Pitt or MZ. I was hoping to find them all on a disk as I have had bad luck trying to install DLC stuff from G4WL. All that aside... there is a bunch of stuff I've never quite figured out. I know that there are several walkthroughs available online that I could review. But this seems like it would be more fun. Helpful & creative comments would be appreciated. Starting from the beginning <more or less> Vault 101 ~ Amata gives me a gun. I've already got a baseball bat & now I have to figure out a way to sneak out of the vault with every cop in the place looking for me. After using up some of my limited supply of ammo rescuing Butch's alcoholic mom from those giant, mutated cockroaches ~ why, I'll never know, I should have just stolen her clothes, booze & welfare checks... I end up more or less having to shoot several cops. Then I confront Amata's dad, who turns out to be a "real jerk" and I end up having to shoot him & Amata gets really PO'ed. Are there reasonable alternatives to shooting the crap out of everything and everybody in Vault 101? Is there any way I can just beat Amata's dad into submission? <Gosh Darn! the forum censoring 'ware really makes it difficult to express myself ~ I'm more like Desmond> Megaton ~ A pleasant stroll through Springvale, robbing mailboxes & jimmying vending machines along the way brings me to the thriving metropolis of Megaton where I learn that Sheriff Simms will been keeping an eye out for me under the assumption that I might commit a few crimes. Oh... and he hints that if I can disarm the big atomic bomb sitting in that large puddle of radioactive wastewater in the middle of town, there might be some kind of reward. After stopping at Moira's place and selling the stuff I stole while fleeing Vault 101 for a few pennies on the dollar, I've got a few caps so I can buy a beer at Moriarty's Saloon & Whorehouse. There's something cool about a saloon that's open at 6 in the morning... interesting crowd. So I chat with everybody & pick up a quest from Lucy but darn it, I wanted to get laid but couldn't afford it. At some point Mr. Burke asks me to make the atomic bomb in the middle of town go BOOM! Burke just rubs me the wrong way & it seems I almost always end up shooting him between the eyes. So far I have not given in to temptation & blown up Megaton. Is there any way to avoid blowing up Megaton & still get that cool penthouse apartment in Tenpenny Tower? Can I kill Burke & still get the apartment? Since Colin Moriarty is the guy I gotta ask for leads as to where I find dear old dad... can I still get on the right track if I blow up Megaton (presumptively killing Moriarty & everyone else who lives in Megaton.) OK... this is enough for right now. If any of you have any comments they would be appreciated and I'm sure to have additional questions.
gsmanners
Vault 101: If you are sneaky (and lucky) you can avoid killing anyone. I always let Butch take my BB gun and shoot the roaches himself (he gives it right back when he's done, and he's not too bad a shot). Megaton: You can only get the Tenpenny suite if you blow up Megaton or if you use a mod (I like the one lets you buy it for 5000 caps). If you know everybody's angle and you've played through a few times, you can easily have 800 or so caps by the time you talk to Moriarty.
spammster
sneak and luck aren't required to get out of Vault 101 without killing anyone (its one of the possible options though) (at least not actively, as far as i remember theres only 1 cop you absolutely have to fight, however he gets attacked by 3 radroaches who will kill him, so just run past him and he'll ignore you (or wait around the corner, use your BB gun against the RR's and loot him. Ignore butch's mom she's a waste of ammo and good for nothin (like her son) just let her die the reward sucks anyway (unless you really wanna collect all unqiue items in the game without cheating, then you have to save her) the most important starting skill in vault 101 is speech (and a charisma of around 4-5), when you tagged that one your odds are pretty good to get out of there without having to fight. but personally I don't like Sneak in Fallout 3, it doesn't work well, if i have sneak 0 or 100 the outcome is the same for me, most of the time I get detected even if i crouch in the darkest corner of the entire area, so I might as well run in guns blazing and kill em all, that way you can be pretty sure to get a critical hit everytime on first hit. Nagaoka
Vault 101: Let the radroaches kill the first officer, if you want to help Butch's mother then use the baseball bat and bludgeon the radroaches. Heck, use the BB gun. Saves you ammo. For the overseer himself, threaten that you'll hurt Amata if he doesn't cooperate and you won't have to kill him. I don't think you actually need to confront him though, you can get the password and key other ways. Amata won't be hurt. Megaton: what was said before, use the "buy Tenpenny Suite" mod. I'm finding I like the Megaton house more though. It's cozy, has two stories, a kitchen area, a guest room, a bedroom, and if you're good enough, a somewhat frightening wake up call every morning from your adoring fan when you walk outside. Then again with the mod you can have both of them.
evilneko
if i have sneak 0 or 100 the outcome is the same for me, most of the time I get detected even if i crouch in the darkest corner of the entire area, Funny. My first character got to the point she could crouch and creep right up to a super mutie, being directly in FRONT of it, and still be undetected. Even sneaking around the relatively more perceptive Mirelurks was cake, no pun intended. Cute little Talia was quite the sneak.
PerroLoco53218
First, thanks to all of you who have made suggestions & comments. I was about to start a new game & player character, however fate intervened in that I found a copy of the Pitt & OpAnchorage at BestBuy so I am sorta playing out my current game & PC. I've done this several times in the past and it never fails to amaze me that I find the simple act of making a new PC to be a blast and then the game takes on new life. Though one of these days I'm gonna have to go for a really evil character. I like the idea of giving Butch my BB gun to kill the roaches himself. Does he still give you his tunnelsnake outfit? Guess I'm gonna have to try letting the roaches kill that cop but is there a clean way to get away from the cops that show up when you say goodbye to Amata at the Vault 101 tunnel exit, when she always berates me for killing her scumbag daddy? Regarding sneak... I've always gone for maximum sneak, including getting the Reilly's Ranger battle armor, cool sunglasses & the shady hat. With all this stuff I end up with 100+ sneak and usually I can get up close & personal with all sorts of targets of opportunity including but not limited to Ghouls, Glowy Ghouls, Super Mutants, Raiders, Enclave officers & soldiers, as well as those Talon thugs. Then I cap 'em in the head with my silenced 10mm & usually get crits or one shot kills. It seems, though I am not sure, that the more you do this "sneaky kill" stuff the better you get at it... especially worth it to use a stealthboy just to get the crit hits in sneak mode. One place sneak hasn't helped is when I attempted to sneak into the Pitt... I got beat up by the guard raiders no matter when I did! OK... what's the downside to blowing up Megaton? I guess all the characters there & any possible quests go up with the mushroom cloud? Or are other options available? What good stuff becomes available if I decide to blow up Megaton? spammster
well you blow up a bobblehead, so make sure you collect that one. and the megaton house is better than the tenpenny suite (personally) but i don't think you get any new quests out of that. just use a mod to keep both places. No way around that. It's scripted. You simply cannot enter The Pitt without having your stuff taken away. :(
gsmanners
If you help save Butch's mom, he gives you the outfit. It doesn't matter really whether you lend him the BB gun. I just like to do that because it helps me role-play it. If you don't kill the overseer (which I never do) then Amata doesn't ever berate you, but she does abandon you to fend for yourself in the wasteland (I'm not really sure which is worse). The thing about sneak is that it is vulnerable to anything waiting in ambush. If a creature is in ambush mode, it raises their perception to the extent that you will need both 100 sneak and 100 chameleon in order to go undetected (and chameleon comes from the Stealth Boy and/or Chinese Stealth armor). The downside of blowing up Megaton (even if you collect Jericho and the Bobblehead first) is that you really need to be role-playing a wasteful idiot as well as evil character. I could never get past that, myself.
