THIRTY-FIVE

The Brotherhood of Steel set up communications with other O/of/S units approaching the area. They revealed that a large convoy of hoverships, airships and a few experimental skyships were heading towards the DC Wastelands. Scouts were moving through the area including Sisterhood of Steel stealth units.

Lieutenant Dolan wanted to get back into action, as did his men, but they were ordered to stay in the bunker for now and to help protect it. An Envoy Party from the Elders of Steel was on its way by vertibird to the bunker and was bringing other specialists with it. Other vertibirds with it would bring soldiers and yet other specialists. The E/of/S very much wanted to speak with the XFIA people and they wanted to check out the chamber of prototypes.

Prototypes were stored away but examples were in a kind of museum gallery chamber. Bobby-Bill examined a very early and very clunky version of power armour armed with a 12.7mm heavy machinegun. Later models of the same type of machine had been used in US invasion of Canada with mixed results. Canadian guerrilla soldiers had soon learned to hit them with Molotov cocktails.

Scully came up beside him and smiled at him. Then she studied the prototype. “The 9/of/9 developed such machines but after back engineered captured alien devices of the Pakhunters, the Zetans and others. Zibiomechanics was developed after examining hivac creatures and their exotic living machines. But I suppose you know all that already.”

“Our picture is far from complete.” He turned and pointed to a carefully deactivated and secured zibiomechanical worker in an armaglass case. “Why did they go berserk and turn against people or simply die? Three members of the Ninth Nine of the 9/of/9 were given the task of developing the zibiomechanicals but they were given relatively little resources to carry out such a complicated task. Were they meant to fail?”

Scully sighed. “One has to keep perspective in conspiracy hunting. One can start to see too many conspiracies, too much complexity and miss the simpler truth. Then again, in this case, there seems to have been a Great World Conspiracy ridden with complexities including a Great Counter Conspiracy and a United States Nationalist Conspiracy plus some others. You looked through our X-Files Databanks, memorising them while pretending just to breeze through them.”

He shrugged. “There was no attempted pretence on my part. Look there.”

There was an early positronic computer of the kind also known as AI/BCs that were to become the basis of AI-supercomputers, prime robotics and then androids especially during Wartime of the Great War when the old cities were being destroyed and people were retreating underground or into space. Antigravity boosted rocketships or ABRSs launched to the moon and to Mars. Nobody had communicated with the Lunarites or Marsites since the end of the Great War, since the Days of Apocalypse.

Next to it was a positronic brain, an early development model for androids that had never gone into any androids.

Next to them both was an early android with basic learning functionalities. It was a sexless rather boxy looking basic human look with hairless grey skin and darker grey coveralls, black boots and a black pouchbelt with useful items.

Next to that was an early true antibomb robot on four flexible double-jointed legs ending in feet with retractable wheels, a big cubic armoured body and a big instrumentation turret. Despite its name it could also be used to detect and safely remove mines from an area.

Scully smiled and undid a button on her shirt. “The Wastelanders could use a whole lot of them, don’t you think? Copies of all these devices would come in handy. That big old early power armour could be used for construction work.”

Bobby-Bill smiled. “Are you sure you want to seduce me? We have thirteen varied genetic inheritances in me and in truth not even we know what they are all. One is human. It has not always proven comfortable to have such a nature. You are very sexy, very attractive.”

Scully gave him an odd smile and undid another button. “Actually, sweet young man, I am hot.”

He nodded. “I know but you needn’t brag about it.”

Scully smiled at him. “You know our truth, then.”

He nodded. “The rainbow light took you! Omni?”

Scully nodded. “Omni are spread out amongst the Wastelanders and others. Some of us are in Megaton assisting the Megaton Town Council. We communicate with the Cyber carefully. We do not know why they do what they do in Megaton, why they continue to pretend to be human though they know they have been discovered. They sent a whole army of cyberhumans and robots somewhere but where? They are building a large settlement in the fertile glowcrystal caverns. We do know they are fearful of some powerful dark force and that they are wary of the Bobby Triplets, which would include you.”

Bobby-Bill nodded. “Do the Cyber know where the android thugs come from?”

She nodded. “Beneath Outer Megaton. At least they are emerging from exits in basements of abandoned houses. Cyber-infiltrators have found there evidence of some kind of teleportation in use. Androids are teleported in but now and then one fails to solidify properly and disintegrates leaving only a few traces. At least one in four does not make it so they must really be seen as expendable or the force sending them is desperate, is using up valuable resources.”

Bobby-Bill frowned. The Bobby Triplets were trapped away from Megaton and so were unable to investigate what was going on in Megaton. Bobby-Bear was busy caring for the beloved babystop, Bobby-Blue was trying to protect the Harrington Family as was Bobby-Boo and Bobby-Biz was busy simply spying on what ever she could in the shapeform of various small animals.

Should he go to Megaton?

Scully took him by the hand and led him through the large gallery to a cul-de-sac. There was a prototype of a large robotic pleasure bed that, oddly enough, was fully activated and ready to use.

She smiled at him. “Mulder is the first biological father and he is always my first, my primary love.”

Bobby-Bill smiled. It seemed he would be staying there for at least a while.

hmmmm.... why not?

THIRTY-SIX

Bobby-Bob and his small army of robots, androids and elementals was growing as it reached the lower levels beneath Hopetown. Yet they began to be attacked by large swarms of zipuppetzi controlled humans, zizombies and twisted zibiomech living machines based on hivac genes, the hivac being the alien invaders who had come through a transdimensional rift in South America.

Bobby-Bob began to sense the presence of Professor Agakar again but this time it was twisted and insane. 5/9(9) he had called himself, one of the great Nine-of-Nine but only at its lowest ranks. Could this be a clone? Surely the Bobby Triplets had sensed Professor Agakar die earlier on, had sensed him cease to exist unless that was just a powerful clever trick of some kind.

Bobby-Bob strode across the concrete floor of a large bunker chamber with furniture and other objects piled up in barricade form. There had been a big battle there between free willed humans and the zibiomechanical swarms but the humans had lost. The skeletal remains were scattered amongst discarded human possessions, clothes, weapons and such like.

It was there amongst the skeletal remains that he found holotape journals of the now dead Mayor of the old town. He touched them and the 3D audio visual appeared in his mind. The Mayor had led no cult. He was no madman. His enemies had slandered him. He did not pretend to be anything but a normal man trying to do his best and making mistakes. Or at least that was how the Mayor portrayed himself. Bobby-Ben sensed deception about the man and picked up patterns of contradiction and weakness about his journal entries.

A small notebook written by somebody else, a young woman, seemed to be a more reliable record of what had happened. The Mayor and his followers on the Town Council had made a deal with an outside force to turn against Professor Agakar. A large force of mercenaries would arrive on the island to assist the Mayor in his undertaking. They had never arrived at the town.

The Mayor was a bumbling, arrogant fool who thought too much of himself and his supposedly great talents. Yet he also liked to see himself as being a humble man. His own holotape journals were seen as a stupid joke by the others in the group and the journal entries had become less real the less real power the Mayor had over the group. The Mayor had died crouched against a wall mumbling something about being a great leader of the people while clutching his five journal holotapes to himself.

The Mayor failed to come across as an elemental but was long gone to hell as were many others there. But the young woman was soon standing there as were others as human elementals. That is nakedly translucent.

She spoke. “As far as I know none of the Townsfolk escaped from the warped Professor Agakar clone. He is like a monstrous zibiomechanical machine or robot that has changed every time I have seen him. I think he is trapped in that shapeform now and is quite insane. Another, darker, stronger power came to Harem Island and tricked the foolish professor, manipulating him into self defeating actions. He got rid of all of his human followers by sending us to the town and then isolated us here. That is except for the women and girls of Lagoon Village.”

Bobby-Bob nodded. “The same force that has us Bobby Triplets trapped on this island.”

The woman elemental nodded. “I can sense him now, also, except that there is more than one now. There is your biological father and his biological father. Dexter Devillon is your father and he is very powerful and cunning but the older is even more powerful and far more experienced. Both are of dark nature but the grandfather is the true Lord Dark and also carries the name of Rasputin who was once the mad monk who influenced the last Tsar of Imperial Russia into mad acts and who seduced many noble ladies including the Tsarina herself into dark sexual acts. Yet he has had many names through out history, many aspects. There is a way here, a hidden way, to get to Megaton that Lord Dark can not stop you from using.”

Not far from where they stood was a large side-chamber and in it was a telebooth, part of an experimental network. Bobby-Bob noted the buttons and the labels next to each one. The telebooths could take him to Megaton, to 4-Star General Johnson Hamersley’s House basement-bunker and to a place in Virginia along with a few others.

At that moment the telebooth hummed and shimmered. Out of it stepped a hulking but fast striding cyberman. Then came another and another. But Bobby-Bob felt no sense of threat especially as the figures nodded to him as they passed, seeming to acknowledge his authority. The cavalry had arrived. Soon battledroids were coming through also and human looking cyber-infiltrator soldiers.

The Cyberforce was invading Harem Island.

Colonel Elena Thompson stood in front of him and saluted. She was a cyber-infiltrator, young and beautiful, which was no accident. Her shirt was open to reveal cleavage and the edge of a black lacy bratop which was hardly general issue. “General Benjamin Barritas has ordered me to inform you that the Cyberforce Brigade Alpha-Five now invading the island is under the joint command of the Bobby Triplets.”

Bobby-Bob nodded. “I am returning briefly to Megaton. I suggest you focus on taking this series of bunkers and then the town. The army of elementals will assist you. The androids and robots will return to be with my triplet-sisters.”

Then he stepped into the telebooth and vanished with a shimmer.

THIRTY-SEVEN

Bobby-Bill remained in to 4-Star General Johnson Hamersley’s House basement-bunker with the XFIA people and the four B/of/S soldiers along with the Prewar humans of Hamersley’s family and neighbours.

Bobby-Anne and Bobby-Sue were dealing with the zihuman population below the big Harem Bunkerplex.

Bobby-Bob found himself in a hidden chamber linked to a basement in Outer Megaton. It was secured by cyber-infiltrators who saluted him. It seemed the Bobby Triplets had gained authority with the Cyberforce. The basement was partly storeroom full of goods for it belonged to the Brass Lantern, the bar-diner.

Only a few people were in the normal rooms of the Brass Lantern and all were heavily armed adults in metal or leather armour who had taken part in the fighting. For the moment the thug androids and cultists had ceased their attacks on Outer Megaton. This was good news but grim news was that Sheriff Sims had vanished though the deputy he had been with had appeared mysteriously in the Megaton Hospital in fairly good state of health; she was certain to return to full duty in a few days.

An entrance to the Megaton Subway Station had been found almost by accident by town defenders. A stray grenade had fallen into an old grating topped manhole and after the explosion the grating had become loose. Somebody had gone down there, had found a very old cobwebbed crawl tunnel partly filled with rubbish, and then a larger more recently used chamber with an old style Subway Entrance filling one wall. It was like seeing a bit of Prewar America hidden down below Megaton.

Bobby-Bob managed to get an electric car to go to the Megaton Bunker.

Then he was standing in the Mayor’s office and was looking at his mother who sat behind her desk looking damned tired and a little concerned.

Bobby-Bob spoke. “Why?”

She frowned softly. “Matters are not that simple. I did what I had to do. Dexter Devillon, your second biological father, went away when I asked to him go but he came back some months ago to warn me that his father had come to Harem Island and had tricked Professor Agakar. I knew about the damned professor and the Megaton Secret Council but what could I do? We Harringtons found a home here in Megaton because Dexter Devillon made some sort of deal with Professor Agakar. Dexter came to me only today and told me that his father, Lord Dark, had stolen something very special from Harem Island and was now gone from there. DD, well he is gone into hiding. He battled his father and did some damage to him but was damaged in turn. I have been giving him information and he has done something for me in return.”

She stood up and opened the door to her small bedroom she used when she could not get back home between meetings or other demands. Sleeping on the doublebed was none other than her first husband looking worn, old and exhausted but newly showered, shaved and sated. Mother had taken care of him in more way than one. Johny-Jim Harrington had been in Limbo.

He opened his eyes and smiled at Bobby-Bob. “Thank you!” Then he touched his forehead and a small hard disk of pale brown appeared that he passed to Bobby-Bob. “An extension of yourselves that helped lead me back to Megaton where Devillon was able find me with out much effort and take the credit for bringing back from Limbo. He never did miss a chance at self promotion.”

Bobby-Bob took the disk and held it up. It sparkle shimmered and then it became two metallic golden-silver bracelets. With amazing speed he snapped them around the left wrists of his parents. Then he smiled. “To help keep you safe.”

Kylie-Jo frowned hard at him. “Do you trust me so little?”

Bobby-Bob smiled. “What were the Boxbie Twins really doing in Rivet City? Oh, I see, they were buying something for Dexter Devillon but they moment their task was complete, they forgot all about it. Why did they really go through the farce of being kicked out of the family, a farce that fooled next to nobody? Aaahhh, yes, again they did things for Dexter Devillon that they only remembered long enough to carry out. DD was gathering data and some small exotic bits of hardware. They dealt with Abraham Washington at the Columbian Historical Preservation Society, at that museum-gallery of his. They gave him some small artefacts in exchange for a small black oblong box that dear old Abraham had not been able to gain access to.”

He turned to his first father. “You did foolish things for foolish reasons and paid the price for it. Devillon threw you into Limbo partly because you tried to cheat him.” He turned to his mother. “Harem Island will be free of trouble soon and there should be a whole town, on top of a big hill and inside it, open for settlers. But the rest of the island will be closed off except for a wide strip of land west of the big hill and the waters around the big hill which is the eastern end of the island. The lagoon and the two quarters of the middle area of the island will remain closed off and the small mountain that will be for others. The hill settlement will have certain conditions placed on settlement but also certain types of assistance to do so.”

His mother nodded. “Perhaps you could forgive both of us, one day, for not being perfect and for trying to do the best we can. Then you could even remove these bracelets.”

Bobby-Bob only smiled at his parents, turned and departed in a hurry.

Kylie-Jo closed the door and smiled at her husband. “I hope that you are well rested.”

Herculine sat staring at her computer display in utter awe, awe of the volume of work this amazing writer was continuing to post on the gaming website. She did a bit of writing herself from time to time, but to her chagrin had never produced any substantial volume of work. Thus she was amazed by "Maharg67", for he consistently on a daily basis released new installments of his story that in her opinion were quite worthy of publication. Thus she envied him his talents, his prolific writing prowess, and actually felt a bit ashamed of herself for not completing more of her own work. As she clicked her mouse to move on to the next forum topic she made a resolution to herself, resolved to again shower Maharg67 with compliments the next time she posted a reply in one of his threads. After all, he deserved it.

Herculine, do not be too hard on yourself for it has taken me decades to come to this point. I am 48 years old.

I hope to be published soon and I will remember your support and you will be in the dedication list of my first SF/F novel as will some others will be.

Dezdimona, Species5478 and yourself have proven to be very important to me in a big leap of faith I made by writing on the forums. Often when I wanted to give up, one or more of you have come to my rescue.

The secret to writing is writing.

The secret to completing a piece of writing is to start small and 'do it'. Then grow from there.

So, Herculine, your poetry is wonderful. You complete your poems. Now think of a story as just three moderate sized paragraphs and write it. Start, middle and ending. When you are done, you are done. Put it away and some days later take it out again and read it. Know that you have finished it. You have done something important. Completing bits of writing is actually difficult for many and I find it most troublesome.

Give yourself a deadline and a treat tied to the deadline. Write a five paragraph story. One for the start, two to four for the middle, and one for the conclusion. Put it away. Take it out at the deadline and treat yourself. The most important thing is that your work is done.

Thank you greatly, Herculine!!!
