CronoStorm
Okay... here goes. I'm having an issue with my copy of Oblivion. I am quite hesitant to post my problems on here, but after trolling through this forum and Google to try and find an answer I came up with nothing (yes, including the post three topics or so below this one, which appears to be almost the same problem) and figured I'd try my luck here. A few days ago I purchased Oblivion and both expansions, Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine (although the last one is more DLC than anything). I installed it on my PC, which is extremely good, and was running the game fine on the 'High' graphics setting, with absolutely no slowdown. Then, I decided I would install a few mods which looked pretty good. I downloaded a bunch of them, and installed them. Some worked, some didn't; I wasn't used to the load order, but I soon figured that out. I ended up deciding mods were amazing and I needed more, but I wanted to be extremely organized, so I uninstalled and decided to start from scratch. Now I have my problem; after reinstalling the game, Oblivion now pops up with a message stating that it has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have NO idea what is going on. I tried installing the same way I did before, which was: 1) Install game.2) Install Patch 1.1 or something like that3) Install Shivering Isles4) Install Patch 1.2.4 This worked perfectly the first time. However... when I try patching it with patch #1, it says that the file it is trying to patch is different and doesn't work. For the curious, I was instructed by another person to install the patches one at a time. TL/DR: Uninstalled Oblivion. It was working fine before I uninstalled. Re-installed, now when I get to the start-up screen I click 'Play' and it says 'Oblivion has encountered a problem.' According to the patch (the older one) the file has changed, and I theory that this may be the cause. Any help? I know I was rambling, but this is so frustrating. If any more information is needed, let me know. And again: My specs aren't needed. I'm running a 2009 model Qosmio built for handling games like this like nothing; it was working fine before, it'll work again. Thank you for understanding, and I'll try to be as helpful as possible. EDIT: By the way... when I uninstalled I deleted the game folder. Maybe that wasn't too intelligent...
roquefort
Hi -- Did you have a look at the Reinstalling Oblivion thread? > http://thenexusforums.com/index.php?showtopic=41082 After you uninstall the game you need to clear out every trace of the game from your machine before you re-install (though you can backup saves & mod files). Follow the link and it should give you all the info you need. If you've already done all that then it'll be time to re-examine the problem ;)
bben46
That one is pretty old. And messing around in the registry is not a good thing to try if you don't know exactly what you are doing. I have an updated complete Uninstall/Reinstall that includes a simple registry cleaner. It has worked for many people. Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the articles section of the Nexushttp://www.tesnexus.com/articles/article.php?id=
CronoStorm
I will give it a shot. I am pretty tech savvy, but I know jack about the registry and do not want to try to mess with it. I'll repost after I try what this thread suggests. By the way... if it helps you all, I don't have any saves or mods I want to back up, so no worries there. I'll do anything to get this to work... I just hope I don't have to system restore. That's always a hassle.
roquefort
"That one is pretty old" Hi bben -- I was going to recommend yours but I couldn't find it. Didn't realise that other was outdated. Maybe you could add something to that effect in the post ;) @CronoStorm -- If you use a reputable registry cleaner, such as ccleaner, you should have no problems. It saves a backup of the registry in any case.
CronoStorm
I appreciate all your help. I am using Vista, if that helps any. I'm defragging ATM, and I'll follow the suggestions for Vista users to see if it fixes. I swear I'll never uninstall it again lol By the way, the defragger said I didn't need to defrag, but I did anyway. Hope I'm not wasting my time. EDIT: @roquefort -- I just used ccleaner. Very nice, I had over 360 problems with my registry.
CronoStorm
No go. Nothing worked. I did get my registry clean, so thanks for that, but a clean install of Oblivion with no mods or patches did nothing. I even tried installing it to just plain old Program Files\Games folder instead of Program Files (x86). Still does the same old bull. What is going on? Please, someone help me. I know it works on this machine, it was the other day. This is so frustrating, I could cry.
nosisab
Clean install Oblivion (do not patch), install SI and patch with the last SI version, you do not need to patch anything else/more. It should work, if not you have the incorrect patch for SI (maybe region?).
CronoStorm
Ugh, I feel like an idiot. I wasted my whole day, all I had to do was delete the ini file in my documents. there was obviously something wrong with it. It's fixed now, thank you very much for all your help. Please let others know they can try this to fix it. Cheers!
