Fallout 3 Securom?

Hi,

I've played my Oblivion game to death and now I'm looking for another great game to start. I've heard a lot of good things about Fallout 3 so I decided to go and buy it online along with the 2 add on expansions. But one reviewer said something about the expansion pack having "malware" or Securom. I've heard a lot of bad things about Securom from the Sims 2 expansion packs and I really don't want it on my computer.

Does any of the Fallout games have Securom on them? Thank you. :thanks:

Uhm, I have fallout 3 and have installed it countless times on my various computers...and also the 5 expansion packs are just master files and all the textures, sounds, .etc in a folder called "xlive". Get fallout mod manager AKA FOMM from the nexus and it will move all the master files and other things related to them into the data folder in C:\ Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout3\Data. It's the same as installing a mod. and I have never encountered securom on my Fallout 3 DVD.

SecuROM (also disparagingly known as SuckuROM) is the encryption software (for anti-piracy) since the Oblivion days (and maybe even before that).

There are two problems with SecuROM, both related (predominantly) to Vista/Windows7:

First is a security permissions clash between SecuROM and Vista/7's UAC (User Account Control security). This you can get by by disabling UAC during Fallout3 install. Installing to a directory other than the default C:/Program Files/Bethesda... etc. folder also helps with UAC and other problems. Choosing to install to C:\Games\Fallout3 seems to be the prevailing directory of choice.

Secondly, SuckuRAMA can conflict with firmware for certain DVD-RW drives (HP in particular, but others as well). If you get the ka-chunk, ka-chunk sound from your drive (it's grinding away trying to read the disc), odds are pretty high its a SecuROM/DVD firmware conflict. It's almost a certainty if you disabled UAC. (Though there have been more than enough reports about bad discs being shipped. If you return it and it does it again, it is almost a certainty that it's a SecuROM/firmware clash.)

Here the solution is a bit tougher. If you have a laptop and wireless connection, you can share the laptop's DVD drive on the wireless network and install to your PC that way. Pain in the butt, but it works. This was the solution I had to use when my HP DVD-RW tried to eat the Fallout3 disc for lunch.

The other solution would be to get a USB DVD drive and plug into your PC and install from the USB drive.

Hope this helps.

The games launcher has Securom on it but the game itself is clean, once you've done your settings you can run the game directly from the Fallout3.exe (or have FOMM do it) and not need the disk again. I dare say you could remove Securom from your system after that if no other games use it.

I have also seen reports that the securom will block the game from installing if you have any one of several LEGAL programs that they claim are only used for piracy. One is Alcohol, a perfectly legal CD/DVD copying program that can duplicate a disk and can be used to play the game without having the disk in the drive.

Removing the Alcohol program will allow installing. then you can put it back.

Hmmmm... This is quite interesting.

When Fallout 3 first came out I installed it off my friend's disc and ripped an ISO just in case i needed to reinstall etc.

*content removed since it mentioned specific things related to using an illegal version of the game*

I shall *not* return.

Mentioning anything that might be construed as piracy is against site rules and is grounds for an instant ban. Although there are legal reasons as to why someone might want to make a backup of a game, this is not one of them since you, personally do not own a legal copy.

This thread was already answered, and you would have probably been better off not contributing. Sorry, but this is a ban.
