Well I give up....

Yep. That's it. Finished. I give up with this game on PC. Bethesda should be ashamed of themselves for creating an incredible game and then completely destroying it with the worst amount of crash problems I've ever seen.

NOTHING has helped. Honestly, I have never EVER come across a PC game with SO many crash problems. I played Oblivion on PC for months without a single ctd. Not so with this piece of trash programming.

I have tried EVERY, SINGLE fix there is out there and I'm STILL having random CTDS.

So f**k this. I've come to the conclusion that unless Bethesda pull their lazy ignorant heads out of their a$$e$, this game will never be fixable. Ever.

Even then, Bethesdas patches haven't exactly cured the problem.

Best of luck to the rest of you but my advice is, don't bother wasting your time on a lost cause. Because that's what this is.

This thread is pointless. You shouldn't blame Beth for the game not being stable on your PC, the majority of people can run it fine without any issues. I personally have never experienced crashing with Fallout 3, with the exception of a single occasion when the OA DLC played up.

Oddly enough I've been running Oblivion on three machines and Fallout 3 on two with hardly a hiccup out of either one. I understand from people's remarks that they can be "touchy" I just haven't experienced most any of that. I agree with you that Bethesda really could have done a better job of building a more solid platform to run the games, but the games themselves, as you said, are worth the fight to make them stable. I'm am so very sorry that you have had so many problems with your game and if you are serious about leaving Fallout then you will be missed here on the forums. Be well.

Neither Fallout 3 or Oblivion are "perfect" on the PC. Unlike consoles, where you are developing for a fixed architecture, PC architecture is as varied as are the people who buy/use/upgrade them. So this forces Bethesda (or any game developing company) to strive for a certain "average" scenario.

The game is also developed at a certain point in time and usually for the majority OS of that time. In this case, it was Windows XP for a 32-bit OS. Vista adds some unique challenges, but they are not insurmountable for most users with a modicum of patience and willingness to find the right solutions to address their specific issue(s), x64 OS has added to the probability of potential issues. But to fault Bethesda for developing for XP while Microsoft goes on and releases new OSes is absurd: that's like saying, "I can't get this piece of junk software (developed for XBox) to run on my (fill in some other console)." Read the damn game box! It specifies what the requirements were at the time of release!

Secondly, a huge number of game-stopping crashes are caused by modders. Those that are culpable (and there are a lot of them) need to learn how to prep and release their mods. I can't begin to count the number of mods that were released with a Header flag set to .ESM, not to mention were not cleaned of "Identical to Master" records, checking for circular references, etc. Prepping a mod for release takes only a few minutes (or so) using ElminsterAU's FO3Edit. Miax's FO3Edit Guide - Web-enized should be required reading (and implementing) by any mod author.

Lastly, even more users contribute to the crash problems by not understanding load orders and mod conflicts. This is entirely avoidable if people would just read and research. Almost every conflict I have found among mods were fixable with very little work. Again, reading Miax's guide and following the conflict detection and resolution process fixes 99 percent of conflicts. Sometimes mods conflict in such a way that one of them has to go, but this is very rare -- I have just over 200 mods installed now, and only two have forced me into an eenie-meanie-minie-mo choice.

Fallout 3 will still crash. Even if mod authors and users take all the precautionary steps, sometimes the game still crashes. It is a huge game, using lots of resources. There are probably memory leaks (almost a certainty in something this large), there are interop problems at times between the game and underlying OS and its resources. A ton of things can go wrong, it's surprising that most of the time they don't. Saving often and to different slots helps. Staying on top of problematic areas of the game (by reading this and other forums) helps as well. Hmm ... Rivet City coming up, I know the game is prone to crash there. Time to save.

Crashing is not unique to Fallout3 or Oblivion or just Bethesda-created releases. I've had Visual Studio crash, I've had Eclipse crash, I've had Web applications that I designed crash. The reasons are manifold in each instance, but no complex application -- and Fallout3 is a very complex application -- is immune to it.

So to sum up, I feel your frustation Bazerk83 ... I had my share of them early on too. But there were two ways to overcome that frustration: learn the process and find solutions (the "adapt and overcome" approach) or the "I give up!" approach. Whatever. Personally, I'll bang my head on the wall :wallbash: and find the answer. Know why? Because it feels sooooo good when the pain stops!

This is a good idea. Walk away from the game for a few months, then come back fresh. I think you'll probably find that once you've stopped staring those problems in the face for awhile, the causes will become much more evident.

This game even occasionally crashes on Xbox 360s, the platform that xlive was designed for. The instability of this game on the PS3 speaks for itself.

The issue with mods are mostly cured with common sense. Don't use a lot of new mods all at once, and you'll maybe experience a crash from mods once a year (and I guarantee you it will be because of an overly large mod).

For me, Oblivion was pretty stable. It only crashed a few times on me, but then I've only ever used it with the latest patch and the latest unofficial patch.

hi guys thanks for all of your input, posotive AND negative. I wanna apologise for my frustration and whining like a 10 year old. I actually agree that it's pointless but as I said, it was just frustration.

Despite it, I still knew that really and truly I'm not going to give up. I'm going to keep trying and, specifically, learn even more about how FO3edit works because I definately believe this is the root of my problem.

If I'm honest, Fallout 3 hasn't given me any MAJOR problems. I've been able to enjoy the game and all the mods and DLCs I've installed. It's just extremely frustrating when you finally start to get into the game and enjoy all the extras and bam, crash.

I guess I'm just a perfectionist and expecting too much (wanting the game to run perfectly).

Anyway. Like I said, sorry for the pissy nature of the thread. It's not usually like me.

Onwards and upwards :)
