My Mod

As I have said before, I am making a large mod, however, in one day I can only do so much, I then remove the relevant files and back them in case they are needed.

However, recently I have been getting the message - Cannot find file "D:/Games/Oblivion-CS/Data/textures/effects/SEFXSparkles.dds" after I have run TES4FILES V3.32 as a mod remover. Has anyone any suggestions as to what may be missing, clearly this refers to a dds file that seems to be missing, but I can;t find it.

As I run that programme as a removal mechanism to extract ALL the various files relating to my mod, and having checked in the textures/effects folder, there is only one file there, and NOT the one I want.

Why are you removing files exactly? So long as you aren't changing vanilla files with something you wouldn't personally ever want to use, there is no reason not to keep all pertinent data files within your data folder.

Using some sort of automated process to remove files is usually not a good idea unless the contents of that mod are fixed (like an omod) or you know what you are doing. When this is not the case, you may be accidentally removing other files which are being used by your mod but are not directly related to it.

I don't really understand why you are removing your mod everyday. I like to keep my mods in two places on the hard drive, on a daily back-up on a memory stick, and a weekly backup on CD-RW. I also keep some old saves of when the mod was only partially complete in case there is a catastrophic problem in which the new saves of the mod are messed-up so bad is not time-effective to fix them.

Every time a person takes an action such as removing, installing, modifying, or saving a file, there is a small chance that it will be corrupted and parts will be scrambled, deleted, or added. That is how computers are. Removing your mod every day sounds like a high-risk activity. Do you do this because your computer does not have enough memory on the hard drive for your mod AND your other software such as a word processor or web browser?

I think your missing texture has to do with the sparkling lights that act like butterflies in the Shivering Isles. Things such as Meshes\Effects\sefxsparkledeme01 and sefxsparklemani01. Unless one of your mods changes the sparkles, this could be one of those harmless and frivolous error messages the computer generates. I would expect Oblivion to just refer to the compressed texture files it always uses for vanilla objects when rendering the sparkles. You might run a play-test where you go to the Shivering Isles to look at sparkles and see if anything is amiss.

Good luck with your issue.

I see your points, but I started this daily backup for several reasons. these areas below:

  1. In case of a computer crash.
  2. Since the mod is large, I can only do so much each day, and then back up my work for safety.
  3. Should I need to restore the mod, I have a recent backup to hand,

Since I don't use SI, so the sparkles in that are NOT a problem. However, it does not seem to be something frivolous the computer threw in, I've looked through the Oblivion Textures BSA, but there seems to be no trace of it.

Since I posted this request, I HAVE narrowed down where the missing texture is liable to be, but unfortunately, there DON'T seem to be any textures in that modder's resource! As Vagrant0 rightly says there is an element of risk involved in removing data regularly, and believe me, I was not that keen to start. What finally convinced me was the fact that I lost ALL my work on this mod due to a problem with the install of Oblivion, with hindsight if I had backed up my data I would have not had to re-build the mod to there and would have saved myself quite a bit of time.

Just to let the modding community know that I have found the problem, and managed to get a zero error backup. it appears that a modder's resource I installed required Shivering Isles (though the author did not say so), and since I am not running SI, I got an error message!

Anyway, I've now managed to remove ALL referents to that resource and removed the resource from my system I will also make a note that it requires SI as well. The problem is tht it was a cauldron resource, and the only thing I've managed to find near it is the cooking pot Bethesda made.

Does anyone know how to make these cauldrons WITHOUT dependency on Shivering Isles? I would be grateful if someone could help.:thanks:
