Low fps.

I'm getting pretty low fps in skyrim even though I have a pretty stellar rig. Most places I get around 40-60 fps, but in the cities i get around 30-40. I use an enb and a lot of mods, but even with vanilla i drop to below 40 in cities. Shouldn't i be able to get solid 60 fps in most places even with mods?
In fallout it's even worse dropping to 20 fps in the powder ganger prison. It's seems like a cpu problem, but is this cpu really that weak?

Specs:

GTX 780 ti

Fx 8320

Asus m5a78lm lx v2

8gb ram

From what i read looking at your Motherboard, Cpu and Gpu...ya you should get a solid 60fps....BUT...

Only thing is ...looks to me that Motherboard is not a PCI-e 3.0 slot. and that GPU is 3.0?...could be a bottleneck?

Only did a quick glance at the specs on the motherboard at the Asus site shows the PCI-e at 2.0>>>

Specs page for 780ti at Nvidia shows the GPU at BUS support at 3.0

But ya ,,have you gone thru the BIOS to make sure everything is set correctly, and done any testing to see how well the system runs as a whole?

As far as the PCI-e the 2.0 shouldn't be a problem. I read up on that before I bought the card, and the test only showed a 3 percent performance difference between 2.0 and 3.0. I really don't think it's a gpu problem, 'cause there is only a 5 fps difference in performance, when I turn the enb on and off.

My drops seem to be cpu related as they happen when lot of npcs are on screen. I also seem to get better performance when turning down shadows, which are mostly cpu rendered as far as i know.

I've done some benchmarking with unigine's heaven and nothing seemed out of the ordinary, but I'm not really an expert in benchmarking and don't understand much of the numbers. Do you have any suggestions on how to test my system?

And how do I tell if something in the bios is set wrong?

BIOS...what a pain....lol...

Run a benchmark.....note the Results. (don't have to understand, just note final score)

Make a change in the BIOS....

Run the exact same benchmark....if better, keep change, if not ..revert. (compare to first runs score).

Rinse and repeat.

IT takes commitment to get a system running at peak performance. Read up on your BIOS most newer motherboards have it the easy way, you can click, a choice and have it Turbo charged. As i am old school I Go one setting at a time to tweak my settings...yes this is time consuming BUT i did that 2 years ago, spent a week testing and have not once had to go back . have my 2600k running a nice Overclock of 4.2 over 2 years now, and i game hard! 6-10 hour sessions is the norm! (my record in Skyrim = 19 hours).

Going to a Overclock board ( they like to help) you can learn everything you need to get your system running at peak. you will be surprised at the difference you can make .

Run a car that is out of tune and it will ....stumble, stall, waste gas, run hot. The same is true for a computer.!

IF your ENB is only causing you 5 FPS...its not really working.? A full blown ENB normally robs about 15 - 30 FPS....great trade off as i want the looks.

EDIT: Did a compare Fx 8320 vs 17 2600k Pretty close ..i run 200 + mods with an ENB...you should be able to also... Now i don't need to have 1000FPs it just has to be smooth...I am caped at 30FPS.

Thanks. Well, if something else is bottlenecking the gpu i won't see that big of a hit when adding an enb. Enb will mostly strain the gpu, not the cpu, and a superclocked 780 ti is pretty killer. I'm 100% sure the enb is setup correctly. With my old card my fps was cut in half, when the enb was added. I would be able to run stable at 30 fps with 200+ mods, but I'd like to get a little better performance out of this system.

What gpu do you use? What fps do you get when not capped and without the enb?

Another thing to add is that an intel with 4 cores is much better optimized for Skyrim than an amd with 8 cores, which might explain my bad performance, but I thought I'd be able to run stable at 60 fps, when i bought this cpu.

The question is; is there something wrong with my system? Or do I just need a better cpu for this game?
