I hated steam but have a handle full of games on it part by accident & now with AvP reboot as a concession.

The big trouble is the Games companies hold the keys, they make the games & sell them the way THEY want.

If they use a method which pirates hack quickly & often they will stop using that approach.

If your addicted to games your going to have to make your own or buy ones with shitty protections. :(

I see STEAM and clones of it becoming the NORM for PC and no way gamers can stop it now.

Its as inevitable as Ads on TV :(

The golden age of PC games only in boxes is fading & im sad.

They say no system of protection is unbeatable. Any system they invent will likely be beaten one way or another, given time.

I still think they should just drop the whole anti-piracy thing and plow the money into other areas.

*Will edit if mod thinks this supports piracy

I get really mad whenever something comes along to ruin your games, and yes I'm still mad at EA for C+C3.

The difference between Steam and This new DRM is that Steam only requires you to be online the first time you play your game (which, while still not good, is a lot more reasonable). You can just run it in offline mode the rest of the time. Whereas with this, you HAVE to have a constant, uninterrupted, reasonably fast internet connection, and I don't know anyone who has that (especially not here in the UK). Also, if Ubisoft's servers go down for any reason, everyone gets kicked out of the game. Which means as soon as someone decides to DDoS their servers (which, lets face it, will happen), all the legitimate customers get kicked out of their game (while the pirates don't even notice). When a cracked version of a game downloaded free off bittorrent offers a better experience than the legal, paid for version, you know theres a major problem. And thats the case with more and more games lately.

Incidentally, how many people who would otherwise have bought AC2 on PC, will now get it for a console instead, to avoid this? Because I often wonder if this entire DRM thing is simply being used by publishers to drive as many people onto the consoles as possible; which means cheaper development costs, and more control over what people do (seeing as consoles are 100% under the control of Sony or whoever; players don't have the same freedom as PC users do).

Unfortunately for them, the latest console I own is a SNES. If a software maker drives me not to buy a particular title, I'll simply not buy it, period.

@ EvilNeko - Sometimes when I read your name, I check to make sure you're not behind me.

long ago, many moons past i had respect for game developers, in our times however the only ones i still have respect for are those witty dudes at 3drealms who spent a whole decade sucking money out of a publishers pocket and had fun just for the sake of it, and its no wonder, if i as a developer would be forced again and again to make those shitpiles some publisher call a game and ruin my name for the sake of some publishers wallets i would do the exact same... i have pity for the devs who put sweat, energy and love into their products just to see them ruined by the greed and power hunger of those in charge...

sadly its not even just restricted to games :(

Given Bethesda's history (looking at Fallout 3 and Oblivion mainly) I don't think we have much to worry about, especially since Bethesda's doing the publishing.

Food for thought: Ubisoft's stepping way out on a limb here that even the "Microsoft-of-Gaming" EA backed off of.

I too, but one must remember that this is not the devs fault, the one who makes these idiotic choices are the publishers, and they are most of the reason that games come out shitty, the publishers tell the devs what to do or the game wont get published, and what they tell is not what would offer the best experience but would make the most money. which in most if not all the devs have to follow the publishers rules so that they can become publishers themselves, and the vicious cycle continues
