Decent open source/free video editor?

Recommended Posts

Since I found out Pinnacle Studio (a very old version, had it for years) doesn't work on Vista, I've been looking for a free video editor, but I haven't found anything that suits my needs. There were a few interesting ones, but they're all for Linux, and I'm using Vista. :P

I've worked with Premiere Pro a few times, but it's way too expensive. I understand it's hard to find something like it for free, but there has to be a slightly more professional alternative to Windows Movie Maker, right? ;D

ever tried VirtualDub?

http://www.virtualdub.org/

it's good for converting videos to put on youtube and such...and you can move the stuff around, you just can't add transistions and the like.

It is difficult to find free software that does that...and also be good lol...I don't make videos much but I just use WMM in a pinch.

Yes, I've heard of it, but it isn't really useful for editing videos.

There really doesn't seem to be a decent one out there. I think I need to find a less expensive alternative to Premiere Pro then. :P

The premiere elements version is $100 already. I've obtained it as I simply will use it quite a lot anyway, but in general virtualdub is the single editor that's the one I know of it's totally free. I used some pinnacle 'free' editor called videospin, that wasn't that bad but simply has a 15-day limit on the important codecs so is worthless after a while to my opinion. Although maybe using a converter to get what you need, it wouldn't be optimal. (yet maybe worth a try.).

VirtualDub was already mentioned but you are extremely limited when you tack on "Open Source" as a requirement.

Windows Movie Maker would be just what is needed but the biggest problem is that it is WAY TOO unstable and crashes all the time which leads to frustration even in the simple tasks.

I have found an alternative to Windows Movie Maker which works very-much like it but with many more options and is VERY stable. AVS Video Editor. You have to pay for this package but the nice thing is that it is VERY cheap. Not only that, when you buy one of their programs, you get everything they have ever made for free along with that product...such as AVS Video Converter which I have found to be invaluable.

Since it seems to be impossible to get something like this for free, I'm looking into getting a good video editor for a reasonable price. I might get Premiere Elements since I think I can get it relatively cheap (gotta love college discounts :P ). AVS looks good though.

Thanks for your help, everyone. ;)
