Oblivion Slowing Down Over Time

Recommended Posts

I've been trying to run Oblivion lately and it runs out in the wilderness by Lake Rumare at an average of 10 fps, which I thought was kinda slow, and when I summoned my akatosh mount and flew it around the lake, it was lagging extremely and there was barely a second when I wasn't waiting for the cells to load. I knew something was wrong cause it's never run this slow on this comp before; I would usually get a fairly good famerate flying my dragon through the air, and on the ground it would have more things like grass to load but I'd still get a low of about 10 in the past. Now I get a low of 4. I have downloaded several large mods recently, and my disk space is running low (about 20 gigs left), so maybe that has something to do with it.

I BOSS'd it recently, but I still don't have Wrye Bash, I'll get that too when I get to it.

Thanks for whatever help you can give.

wow lol, is that over the limit there? Looks pretty close...remember you can only have 255 (.esps that is) mods I think it is, that's all the engine can handle.

Have you defragged lately?

Low disk space can contribute to slower performance, but I've only seen it when I used to fill my 20GB up until I had 100MB left on it haha

Holy gargantuan load-lists, batman!

Question 1; Changed any hardware or drivers on the machine lately?

Question 2; Tried a new/different save? This could be an easly indicator of save corruption/bloating.

No to the first one and yes to the second? Right... fun bit;

First the good news - unless the drive is borked thats not responsible for the slowdown. 20gb is more than enough space to run pretty much any game. However, run scandisk and defrag it as Illiad said if you haven't lately. My guess is its a large drive and ideally it should be defragged & scanned every month or so if you've got a lot on there. More if you do a lot of downloading/installing various things.

Secondly, get a decent registry cleaner. Ccleaner is a damn good one with regular updates, very little clutter, and its free. For the same reason as above. Everything you download and install to a computer leaves traces in the registry, and in some (read- almost all) cases, windows itself doesn't remove these entries or clean its registry effectively. Cluttered/broken registry is the no. 1 reason for comp slow-down. Just because its not affecting everything yet doesn't mean thats not the issue. High demand programs like Oblivion will be the first to show signs of slowing up.

Thirdly, these large mods you've installed; If none of the above helps, or you've already done it recently (IE since you're last major download/windows update/installation spree) then try disabling them, one at time. With a mod list like that, its pretty much taken as read you are going to have issues, just some won't always be quite so severe... half of them you probably wouldn't even notice during a regular playthrough.

Bravo though... :) Thats probably the longest load order I've ever seen... definately the longest without FCOM - I'm impressed you've got it running at all. lol.

I am too. That's why my initial plan is not to deactivate them. However, I think I dl'd the Polish version of Brothels of Cyrodiil, due to some file confusion... all that work for nothing, alas. To add to this I've been using a lot of texture mods in my last spree, which change the roads and wilderness, these won't be on that mod list cause they're texture mods; they might also be adding to this issue. It could also have to do with RAEVWD, which if it's even working could be a framerate chopper. The word Defrag seems intimidating to me, not sure how to do it though, or what it is. I thought that was risky last time I heard of it; maybe I'm wrong. I have Ccleaner; haven't used it though. Finally, it overall could be no different, but just seem different because sometimes you just have to play it longer and it starts to run better. As far as hardware, no, and I'm using a save on a character I've been using for a while. And 255? Really, I thought it was something like 655 or something. I hope I'm not coming close to the limit. o_O

Don't worry, too many mods will not cause a slow down. They will cause a crash to let you know you have gone over the limit. However, there is also another limit that few people run into, and that is the total number in the data folder, whether active or not. That number is around 400. I'm not sure what happens at that point, but I suspect it will crash on load.

To avoid this limit, move any unused mods out of the Oblivion folder altogether.

Defragging isn't dangerous, and it will help with some issues, though not all. And its really easy to do because windows does it for you, and it will usually free up space you don't even know you have. I have it scheduled along with a load of other things so I don't even have to look at it, but if I remember correctly, the path on Xp is something along the lines of start>applications>system tools>disk defrag.

Personally, I would defrag it (though if its a huge drive be prepared for that to take a while) reboot it, run Ccleaner, reboot it again and then check to see if you have any notable performance boost.

Also, just so you know, unless you have the ability to make a relocation patch yourself, Brothel of Cyrodil will be pretty much useless to you unless you bin afk weye, RTT and one or two others. It conflicts with anything and everything that alters Weye and the surrounding region and as far as I know there are no patches available for it.

I think RAEVWD would be the main cause of your problems. If you run RAEVWD with landscape replacer mods, you are almost guaranteed to cause poor performance on even the best hardware available ATM. I suggest you remove either RAEVWD (except the base meshes, those will improve performance) or the landscape texture replacers and see if there is an improvement.

You could also look at the website in my signature to see if any of the mods or methods listed there can help you.

Thanks. I already did remove RAEVWD and I ran Ccleaner and tested it and I got a good performance boost... it may even be running like it used to, but I'd still like it to run better. I've got an average of 13 fps on the ground and in the sky it's like high of 10 low of 5. My main problem is in the sky I'm sick of waiting for it to load the area all the time... it just destroys the fun. I'll check that list; are there any mods that improve the performance of cell changes and all that?

The only way you are going to reduce loading times is by reducing the amount of time it takes the game to load your meshes and textures. The most obvious improvement in that regard would be a faster hard drive. Defragmenting would be another way.

After that, you can try reducing the size of the files the game has to load (PyFFI and uninstalling large mesh and texture replacers would help). Then the final way is to extract the contents of your BSAs then repack them as an uncompressed BSA using OBMM.

Of that list, I know the crash prevention mod by Windom increases loading times. Otherwise, I think the only other mod which would affect loading would be the UOPs since they use PyFFIed meshes, which are smaller and perform better.
