Yep. We first ran into that issue while developing Lost Paladins of the Divines when jcarl904 added fur to the werewolf model. Pieces would blink in and out of existence and sometimes would just look plain weird. He ended up keeping it very sparse and using it in areas that made the biggest impact without much chance for overlapping view angles.

 

Bethesda also did something like this using sparse pieces of transparent bits with the troll model.
