Retribution
Highest chance of one happening in more than a 100 years is in the next 24 hours. http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2008/06may_carringtonflare.htm That describes it.
Skotte
If this does happen should we disconnect our computers (power & internet) or would it matter?
Illiad86
Where do you get your figuring? I'm looking at the current shots of the Sun on SOHO... http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/data/realtime-images.html There aren't enough sunspots to cause a Carrington Flare. This would have been all over NASA's and SOHO's website if it was going to happen...
Pronam
It's an 'old story'. If it happens we're in deep trouble and it's quite unpredictable when it'll happen. The intensity of the flare would tell if indeed we'll have some disruptions or just loose the atmosphere and are fully exposed to the suns its radiation. But there isn't really much else that can be told about I guess. ==Actually that's right what Illiad says, I had to do some school project a few years ago and the sun seems to have less spots over a long period of time.
