You need to be prepared for emergencies so I've created a BASIC list of items.

I've ordered them in order of importance (if there is such a thing).

Pocket knife (one that is ONLY a knife)

Large indestructible sheath knife (used solely for a weapon or as a spearhead)

Pocket multi-tool

First-Aid kit (waterproof)

Basic first-aid supplies, plus:

Any prescriptions you must take regularly

Anti-Diarrhea pills

Ibuprofen

Sterile suture kit

Waterproof, LED flashlight and extra batteries

Fire starting materials (suggest you include all of the following):

Butane lighter (a steel one, not a cheap plastic lighter)

Strike-Anywhere matches in waterproof container

Magnesium fire starter

Water purification tablets (about 20 or so)

Para Cord (50’-100’)

Small, LOUD rescue whistle Handheld

Maps (Topographical maps are best)

Compass Metal signaling mirror (metal won’t shatter)

Survival blanket (the foil kind)

30’ to 50’ of 15lb-test fishing line

Different sized fishhooks (3 or so of small, med, large)

100’ of 80lb-test SpiderWire fishing line (use for snares, shelter, etc.)

Small tarp (Less than 10 sq. ft.)

Safety pins

(3) Small plastic tarps or drop cloths (3) – Use these when in the desert to make solar stills

MREs (Meals, ready to eat – find at military surplus or camping stores)

Zip-Loc® Freezer bags Needles and heavy thread

Some Duct Tape (remove 25’ or so from the roll and fold it to save space)

Small, folding shovel Small survival manual(s) on waterproof paper

Edit: small box of baking soda sealed watertight

Magnfying Glass (Lens Only)

This is won't make a disaster a camping trip but it might get you over the hump. All can be stowed in a small backpack, and thrown in the trunk/boot of your car.

@Aurielius

Don't forget the box of baking soda and the magnifying glass (lens only). ;)

@Kendo

I probably left out several things, though I was trying to keep it down in order to fit in a small backpack.

Just add them to the list :thumbsup:

i guess you named a few items too much actually imo :D

you have like 5 fire starting kits in there for example...

many of the things can be improvised with what you find in nature too

you need:

-one fixed blade knife

-a fishing line

-a few hooks (no large ones... medium is ok for most fish and you wont have the time to go for the big catch anyway)

-a "bic" lighter (buthane, but is has a striking steel inside which you can use after its empty, or get just a striking steel instead)

-cloth and good shoes!... socks, socks and more socks... xcept you have really good shoes like "meindl"

-toothbrush

-a few bandaids

-a light cooking pot

-maps and compass (hiking maps or if you have some magic car, road maps)

-first aid kit

-sewing kit

-sleeping bag is advisable as is a tent but you could also improvise those

-a few books about physics, chemistry, medicine and biology aswell as the local plantlife and its uses

(whats eadible, which mushrooms work as antibiotics for example, which berry work against diarreha, how to build a water purifier, shack, shelter...)

the books can be replaced by people with corresponding proffesions, just make sure they survive :P

-a radio transmitter/receiver to find other survivors to mate with and trade goods

-condoms

with that stuff you are mobile, swift and prepared, just make sure the stuff is kept in prime condition

-a dog would be quite useful too

@jaysus

I could only see three, it's intentional redundancy. You might find that the dog is a little difficult to keep on permanent standby. Obviously your SERE skills are superior to mine, I've only had to use them once. :whistling:

And for the record, more people have died due to drunk driving in the last month than anyone has died due to the swine flu, world wide, since it started. When panic and fear-mongering win out, we all pay the price.

The reason for responding to the danger of swine flu was excellent and based on history.

It could be argued that the efforts to control swine flu were effective and so no pandemic took place.

It is easy to point to a lack of a pandemic having happened and assume that it would never have happened even if there had been no restrictions imposed. The only way to have proven one wrong would have resulted in a world wide disaster. A no win situation for those supporting tight controls and restrictions during times of such threats.

The flue epidemic after World War One killed more people than the war itself did. Figures vary but it was most likely around fifty million, a large portion of the world population at the time. The horrors of such a plague, once control is lost, are almost beyond description. While I studied history at university I studied the Black Plague and its effects which greatly altered history. The world simply can not afford any such event to happen again, especially as a world wide pandemic. It could bring the whole world to a new dark age and the 'living would envy the dead' at least for a very long time.

As for survival, first one needs the mentality of survival, the understanding that the rules have changed, the acceptance of the change. Disasters kill many people simply because they can not deal with the resulting changes, can not face let alone meet new challenges. If you do not have the survival thinking, then the rest of it is of little use.

you wouldnt want to run around with an itchy or burning crotch while you are fighting a horde of zombies now would you?... nono...

and why would they suddenly start to resist my magnificent charms just because the world has ended anyway? :whistling:

@swineflu

actually a different topic but the "normal" flu kills about 400k people a year... i know a bunch who had swine flu and all agreed its like a mild form of the usual flu, nasty but nothing as terrible as the politicans and the media made us believe

all recorded death incidents actually were people who died of aspiration problems and the media just made them swine flu victims, swine flu however cant be proven after the patient is dead.

No, the world can afford it to happen again. There are too many humans on the world.

Truth be told, I have nothing against China but if a massive pandemic hit them in the back of the head when the weren't looking, I would feel no sympathy for them. Remember, Thats about 300 million gone already. estimated figure, but it is a lot.
