"File in use"

That's occurs when they are really in use, the trick is finding which other application is locking it, for example, if extracted from a 7z file and keeping 7zip open; some other program editing it, sometimes may be a entire folder that has some it's files opened elsewhere.

Although not clear in the message you posted, the file may just be ready only or unauthorized.

If your are under Vista or Windows 7 and installed at C:\Program Files, this may be the reason.

Hi Nosi,

I can't find where else it could be running. I have Windows XP Pro.

I'm going to have to do what I've been avoiding and that is to reinstall everything in my Oblivion game.

I hope this fixes all of the bugs in my construction set. My game works fine. It works great. It's the constructionset that's giving me a hassle.

Thank you for your help though. I appreciate it. :teehee:

PS Edit - Have you download the newer CS version needed by the patched game? (that one that comes with the DVD is outdated)

If your game is working fine I can't see how reinstalling it will fix the CS. Please tell us what are the procedures you are trying to perform that gives the issue, which part it happens (it's on loading CS? editing a resource?, saving the mod?), are you sure at least Oblivion ESM is being called as master file for the plugin?

PS: as already told. The file may be marked as read only, which prevent it being changed/deleted. Try directly to make a copy of it and deleting the original.

Anyway you should right click it, go in "Properties" and make sure the "read only" box is clear (not ticked) and/or it's not flagged as "system file".

IMPORTANT: for some reason MS turns "Show the extension for known files" off. knowing the file type we are dealing is a good security measure, not doing it is a serious security mistake second many which I second... So, if that feature is turned out (by default it is) to you, open the Control Panel, find the "folder options" or whatever in that line you have there... search for the above option and make sure you CAN SEE the extensions.

unnecessary addendum: Maybe MS is too ashamed of their extension dependence elegance lacking, who knows? :)

Hi Nosi,

I went ahead and reinstalled Oblivion clean with the 2 expansion packs and patches. And everything seems to be working fine now.

I have one question that's off topic, though. I'm using an urn as a planter. I've enlarged it but it's easily knocked over while playing in the game. How do I make it not be knocked over? Do I click on "persistent reference"? Is that what that's for? If not, please tell me how. Thank you.

Oh guess what, I forgot to tell you this in my last post. The "files in use" were all the active files on my Oblivionmod manager. Isn't that strange? I have no idea why it did that.

I'm getting other error notices now about a companion sleeping or something. I just click them off and ignore them. At least they don't mess up my modding.
