roquefort
I just decided to re-install both Fallout3 and Oblivion because of increasingly perverse & crashy behaviour. The Oblivion install went OK, but when I put the Fallout disk in to uninstall that, the drive wouldn't sense the presence of a disk. No error messages appeared, and Windows Explorer showed it as an empty drive  So, I uninstalled Fallout using Ccleaner, gave the registry a good clean out, and a further scouring out of orphan files with the Revo uninstaller just to be sure, and managed in the end to re-install from the drive on another desktop I have networked to this one (useful to know you can do that). Fortunately with FOSE I can run the game without the disk in the drive, so it all looks OK at the moment. The puzzle is though, what's up with the drive? It didn't mind Oblivion, it doesn't mind any other DVDs I put in, and it doesn't mind the BS/PL add-on pack DVD, it's just that now it hates the Fallout disk, which it didn't mind last year. The disk itself is nice & clean and has been in its package more or less since the original installation, and it ran just fine on the network drive. So...I just don't know. Anybody else had this problem? EDIT: Looks like Talonkarrde down there is having similar problems..
evilneko
Could be a symptom of a drive starting to go flakey. My desktop has a CDRW drive and a DVD drive. The CD burner's...temperamental, which is sad because it's the fastest thing I ever seen at ripping CDs. It's a crap shoot whether it'll recognize a disc or not. Watch for it to happen with more discs. Then you'll know for sure. You could try burning a copy of your Fallout 3 dvd, see if your drive recognizes the burned copy. The copy protection might prevent it from launching via launcher, but it'll probably actually install from it. Keep a backup copy of your Fallout ini file. ;)

Yeah, it could be a failing drive, it's quite old. I'll try the copying idea, but I probably should get another drive. This one is read-only. We have two other puters in the household that both have read/write drives, but one on this machine would be useful

pkleiss
Since this hasn't been said, I thought I'd offer it... Your DVD might just be dirty or scratched up. In the former case, a bit of rubbing alcohol and a clean paper towel might help to clean it. In the latter case, there's not a lot you can do. You must have missed where I said, "The disk itself is nice & clean and has been in its package more or less since the original installation, and it ran just fine on the network drive." ;) I'm spectacularly fussy about disk-care, probably because I have a collection of old vinyl records and the habit is established. Anyhow thanks to all who responded. The game seems to be running OK now, just got to start installing mods. I'll be backing up the data folder regularly from now on though.. Quetzlsacatanango
Someone reported a while back that disabling their antivirus got around this slow 2nd disc issue.

I'd have to go with the drive going bad then too. Someone reported a while back that disabling their antivirus got around this slow 2nd disc issue. Yes, but he is talking about disk #1.
