tawney
I have NVIDIA Graphics and I recently downloaded the update. At least that's what my windows update manager told me to download... But when I went to play Oblivion it said something about not recognizing something, so it set the video settings back to medium. I didn't really pay much attention to it thinking I would go ahead and set them back the way they used to be. But when I exited out after resetting them to my preferred settings and reloaded the game the graphics were still the same. I've done this several times now and I can't figure out why they keep resetting to default. It's actually scaring me now because I don't want to uninstall or something. Also something I found weird, is how when I exit the game to my desktop it acts like the game crashed. It says there is an error and that it unexpectedly stopped working. But I purposely chose to exit out. Why is that? Could that be the source why it isn't saving my video settings correctly? I use mods but I always make sure there aren't any serious conflicts. Although sometimes old files get replaced or deleted when I clean out conflicting mods. Could it be possible I removed a valuable file or application by accident? By the way the adapter in my options says I'm using NVIDIA GeForce 8200M G. I assume that is the update name? Edit: Wow, I didn't realize my graphics weren't very good. Surprisingly I can play it with extremely high quality and get very little lag. I've got all the features on except shadows on grass and the window reflections. Well I fixed my problem anyway, I just adjusted it from the launcher first. Then I adjusted certain features like high quality water from the game and saved. Works like it used to!
bben46
Yes, the crashing on exit is the reason your graphics settings are not being saved.8200M says you are using a laptop. Nvidia just released a new driver for that series on March 30. the rev number is 197.16. There are several ways to avoid the crash on exit. one is to use the console to quit - enter qqq in the console.Another is Fast Exit: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22410And Windom-earls crash prevention system: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22282
nosisab
must assume it's an onboard video, the 8200 is commonly used this way. You really should not attempt to get more than medium quality even in a relatively low resolution. Actually I'm surprised you can play with acceptable performance at medium quality unless the screen resolution is low. You should get the nvidia drivers instead using that supplied by windows, it comes with a nice nvidia control panel that allows for a finer graphic tunning. Sadly anything less than the 8500gt is bad for 3D applications (like most games) despite being good enough for movies and general usage, there is nothing to do about it other than investing in an more appropriated video card for gaming. Notice that 8500 itself is practically the "minimum" for an acceptable performance for most games and the series 8xxx is outdated by now, even the series 9xxx too.
