Red Dead Redemption

Thor.

Well, my wife wanted me to get something so I went ahead and got RDR for the 360. I put the kids to bed early last night and had a go.

And of course, being a gun-toting Texan, this game appeals to me.

Swimming. There ain't none. You mistakenly fall off a dock and you simply die. No struggling, to rescue divers...nothing...just dead if you hit the water. So let that be a warning to you. Water = Hydrochloric Acid.

heh yeah falling into water is bad, but if you think back to older rockstar games, falling into water always killed you... ^_^ its a shame you have not played GT4 alot you would be injoying the game more the controls are all most the same, take your time also i guess some patches will come out soon to fix the little bugs

I recently finished the single player storyline. It was not what I was expecting. I had it in my mind how the end was going to play out from the beginning and it seemed to reinforce this line of thought throughout the storyline but there was a point close to the end where I was completely surprised. I thought it would still end a certain way but it actually ended exactly opposite as to how I thought it would go down.

Great story but I cannot talk much about it without giving away critical plot spoilers.

I would like to share a "special moment" I experienced while playing this game that will be forever ingrained in my memory (e.g. about 2 weeks).

Background

When hunting, you get used to the scene where you pull out your trusty knife, squat down, cut away and then pop back up. It always irritated me that when I approach an animal to skin, I face a certain direction but when the cutscene is finished, I can be facing any direction and usually have to re-orientate myself to where I was facing so I know where my other kills fell down (I usually kill several in rapid succession and then harvest their goods).

The Location

I was in the Tall Trees area which is known for its deadly hunting ground which always makes you look over your shoulders to see what is stalking you. It is fairly easy to keep from being killed when you can actually see what is around you. But that is fairly difficult when close to a mountain that can hide predators just over a nearby ridge that you cannot see past. The most deadly animal I've hunted is the bear because it is capable of killing you and your horse in a single attack before you can recover to get a single shot off.

The "Special Moment"

I just got through killing several Elk and was smiling thinking about the cash I was going to make. I did my typical "Tall Trees Crazy Ivan" maneuver which is to look all around for predators before dismounting. I saw nothing moving nor any threatening figures in the distance. I press the key to start the skinning process and as usually it shows my character's face as I unsheathe my knife and as I kneel down, I see a huge bear standing directly behind me standing on his two hind legs.

My immediate thought process was this:

  1. Oh crap! I have only seconds to figure out what I need to do to avoid being killed (and loosing all those wonderful hides I've recently collected...oh my...I haven't saved in a long time..double crap!
  2. Oh no, the bear is right behind me....but because the dang game engine decides to randomly change which direction I'm facing after a skin job, I don't know where his is....just that he is within striking distance...triple crap!
  3. I need to pull my gun and immediately go into Dead Eye so I can spin around and get a head shot...no other shot will work (I always carry the auto-shotty as my primary for just-in-case and close-up scenarios like this).

What happened was this:

  1. I start to pull my weapon but before I can even pull it out...thwak! Smacked down like a red-headed step child with the ultimate ban hammer of doom!
  2. I lay there in the fetal position and realize that I did not die from the initial attack. Woo Hoo!!! A second chance!!!!
  3. As I start to get up...thwak! Chomp, Chomp. Apparently the bear pressed the "skin human" key.
