Pixeldust
The most disappointing thing about Skyrim; 1. Your character is only special because they're the Dragonborn.2. The Thieves Guild questline you barely steal or pickpocket.3. The Mages Guild is in shambles and isn't the least bit impressive.4. The Fighters Guild requires you to become a Werewolf to advance.5. The Dark Brotherhood ends the same way as it did in Oblivion.6. The Radiant Quest System is bland and stale.7. All Guild questlines are incrediably short and not exciting.8. When you finish the main questline, there is no difference in the world around you.7. Dragons are the new Cliffracers.8. You cannot create your own magic spells within the game.9. Quests are always follow the arrow, theres no point in reading your journal anymore unless it is to track your next quest.10. There is always a shortcut out of every dungeon to the point it ruins immersion.11. There is no difficult dungeon puzzles, they're insultingly easy.12. There is no levitation, no high jumping/acrobatics skill, in a world of magic it seems strange not to have either.13. Cities are not near big enough to be considered cities, it's more like modest sized towns if even that.14. You cannot equip a weapon and a shield, while having magic equipped as well. (Something that Oblivion lets you do by default.)15. Dual-wielding doesn't even display both weapons on either hip, and you can't even block while dual wielding. 16. There is hardly any memorable characters, they all feel hollow and bland.17. The marriage system is a slapped on feature rather than a well-developed one.18. The DLC pales in comparison to the amount that Oblivion has.19. For a game that people claim to supposedly have decent graphics, there sure isn't enough content to make it feel as epic as it looks.20. The PC version feels like a crappy console port in terms of how well the game performs.

black06
@olnorton: I agree the game itself is good
MechTheDane
The Hero, Champion, Incarnate, Shezzerine, Dragonborn etc. is built from a rather specific mythic mold. They are almost always prisoners of such low standing that they are rendered effectively anonymous to everyone. They are the lynch-pin of a mythologically potent moment. Events and forces that have btaken eras to formulate and ferment are suddenly released into the essentially empty vassal of the name-less prisoner. This is why anonymity is so important. No one is free. They are bound by the circumstances of their existence. Every decision we think we make, is dependent on a thousand thousand other decisions others have been making around us. In the same way that the 55th page in a book has little choice but to follow the lead of the 54th page. The very nature of the TES hero though, rejects these normal constraints. He is the blank slate, he is formless and without mold; turning him into the greatest possible conduit for mythic powers. The perfect pawn. However this is a two way street. His future has to be as undefined as his past. The very notion of a future is built upon the premise of a past. And our hero is past-less. This is why he cannot become King or Jarl. This is also why the Nevererine was unable to retain his position of leadership long. You're the blank-slate of destiny, the hero required by prophecy. You come from nothing and disappear back into nothing. Now, that said. I think a lot of the loose ends of Skyrim were intended to be to picked up in future installments of TES. In the same way that Daggerfall, Morrowind and Oblivion all cover a close succession of events. Skyrim and at least one other game will do the same. Obviously it will ultimately be based around the Thalmor and probably an establishment of a new status quo (empire?). Which is why you don't really get a satisfying conclusion in regards to the greater political situation or the Thalmor question.
MidbossVyers
Well, back in Arena and Daggerfall, you could build your own past using a glorified ad-lib method.
