New Game Issues

I have searched the web extensively and found dozens of solutions to this problem; two of which seem plausible, and have been reported as working solutions. Unfortunately, neither option has worked for me.

So, after installing Fallout 3, I start it up, select new game, and watch the introduction video; but as soon as the video ends, the game freezes. Upon CRL+ALT+DLT I discovered the the executable was no longer responding, So I manually end the process and try again. Same thing happens. This is when I began to search the web for a solution.

I find, that there is a widely accepted d3d9.dll patch that works for 80% of users with this problem, so I download and install it. This time I start a new game, and after the introduction I hear a heartbeat, but the screen remains black, and never does anything. (Even though I can still hear the heartbeat) Again I CRL+ALT+DLT and have to end the process manually. Again I search the web and find that users using a quad core processor have to manually configure the game to use only two of those cores, by changing "bUseThreadedAI=0" to "bUseThreadedAI=1" and adding "iNumHWThreads=2" beneath it. I tried this, and after the intro ended, I heard the heartbeat, but this time the screen grew brighter, and the heartbeat faster until I heard a baby crying and saw a doctor checking weather I was a boy or a girl. Then I received a message asking which I wanted to be. And after choosing, the cut-scene continues, and just as I am sure it's working, it freezes, but the voices continue to speak.

Frustrated, I try using both solutions in conjunction, and this time it freezes right as the screen is growing brighter and the heartbeat faster. I really don't know what else to do! Please, any help would be appreciated a great deal. I am beginning to wondering if using Tale of Two Wastelands is the only way I will ever be able to experience Fallout 3.

Please see "How to ask for help" http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/1592053-how-to-ask-for-help/

Or try this, start the game with no mods, just the vanilla game. If you have everything installed right and your system can run the game, it should proceed as normal. The game was made before any mods and they are likely to interfere with the game (they did in my game). Just before you enter the cafeteria for the birthday, make a save and exit the game. At this time, enable your mods and go back into the game.

It is also a good idea to make a save just before you open the door at the end of the tunnel. This way you can start a new game with having to go through the tutorial again. And you will still be able to change your character stats. Also, make a save after you enter the wasteland.

Thank you for replying, I read the HTAFH (How to ask for help) and apologize for my long ranting text wall. Lol :D

Thing is, I don't have any mods for Fallout 3, nor any previous save-games, this is the first time I start a new game, and I haven't been able to get past the gender selection box.

I should have sufficient capabilities to run the game, especially considering that I can run Fallout New Vegas.

My basic system specifications:

Processor: i5 3210M 3.10GHz

Graphics: GT 430

RAM: 4GB (not sure of the other specs)

Motherboard ASRock H6IM-HVS

Power Supply: 450 Watt Generic

Since you are running the vanilla game, are you sure you edited the correct fallout3.ini? It would be the one in "Documents\My Games\Fallout 3", not the one in the folder where the fallout.exe is located.

Also, did you install the game in the default location?

These tips might be able to help you: http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1465357-installing-fallout-3-with-windows-78-and-xp/

Wow, It's working!!! I had edited the wrong .ini file! it's working now, I'm busy choosing my race. Still not in the clear zone yet, but I think it will work fine now.

Thank you so much! How do I give you a Kudos? you totally deserve one. I'll play it for a while and see if everything's working correctly, I'll check back if it freezes again.

And yes, it is installed in the default location.

If you intend to mod the game (why wouldn't you), it is best to have the game in a location other than "Program Files". It it is a Steam download, you can find instructions on Steam on how to move it. If it is a disc copy, before you get too far, uninstall the game and re-install it in another location. During install you will get the option to have a default install or custom install. Choose the custom install and type the path to where you want the game installed. Quite a few people have it installed in the "Games" folder. I have mine installed directly on the hard drive in "Bethesda Softworks" folder. This will have the game outside of the User Account Control and make it easier to use mods like FOMM, Large Address Aware Enabler, FOSE, etc.
