Recommend some mods

Hi all, I'm new to the Nexus community and have been having lots of fun with some of the fantastic DA:O mods on here. Having finished it for the third time however, I thought I'd give FO3 a go on the PC. I finished the 360 game (no DLCs) when it first came out but now have the PC version with all official DLCs. I would like to have a fun playthru on PC but the sheer number and complexity of available mods on here is dazzling to say the least!!

I would like to ask then, for your opinions on some good/essential mods to download for a more enjoyable time in-game. I have a top-end -> extreme PC and don't mind a little tinkering with game files ;-) I'm particularly looking for anything that makes the game look prettier, quality of life improvements, new cool looking armours/weapons/outfits, RP improvements/customisation, fun/interesting new mechanics and/or anything that just adds a little more fun and versatility to the game. I'm not really interested in changing the core balance/gameplay (ie. cheat-mode weapons or nightmare difficulty). I'll be starting a new game with the official DLCs (five I believe).

Your suggestions and pointers woud be gratefully received. I'm comfortable enough using the main Nexus site so enough information to find the mods you describe would be ample! My apologies if this has been asked countless times, please forgive me and just point me in the right direction. All the best.

Thank you for those links! I had seen those pages actually but they are quite comprehensive and a little daunting. I was hoping players might recommend some well-made, specific mods they've tried and enjoyed. Are there any on those lists in particular that you would say are must-haves for a new playthru? Thanks again for your trouble

Companions are good company, and lots of people like Kelsey...

Then there's the Hoverchair for fun and fast (non-teleport) travel...

I personally like the PipButler3000; amusing & useful in warning you about nearby enemies before you might have noticed them yourself...

Just a tip -- before you start piling up too many complex mods, save a backup of your data folder (after leaving Vault 101) & savegames, just in case some combination of mods borks your game so badly that you have to re-install and go through the whole tutorial level again. That can happen.

You should visit my Babe Body Download hub. Besides the Body Mod links it also contains links to Retexes, that

make some weapons more gritty and used.

What's your experience in handling mods? Have you used mods in bethesda's previous games, or perhaps modded them yourself? I know my modding experience in Morrowind helped me a helluvalot in installing mods and load orders for Fallout :P

@ Roquefort (fantastic name BTW! ), Rausheim & Olaf, Thank you very much for those links. These mods sound exactly like the sort of thing I'm looking for. I've sorta worked out now FOMM and FOSE (ie. the game is starting with them installed!) so will spend some time getting your great suggestions working. Many thanks for all your trouble, am looking forward to getting in some game time over this 3 day weekend here in the UK  Much appreciated!

@ Uncl T, Years ago I made a handful of items for Morrowind in the toolset, some rings, a sword and my favourite being a "Flying Shirt" {fairly self explanatory!) :ninja: I completed PC Oblivion years ago, vanilla, and haven't felt like replaying it. I wish Bethesda had given it as much attention in the DLC dept as they had FO3 and the expansions for MW. From what I can see though, FO3 mods are leaps and bounds more complex than MW ones ever were. Perhaps the setting, the game engine or the toolset have simply given the community more to work with, but the fact some smart players have created FOMM and FOSE shows how much the talented modders have come. Adding new mechanics to a game the scope of FO3 is amazing, and way beyond my Flying Shirt....although now that I think about it I have an idea for the toolset

Would you mind telling me what you meant about "load orders"?

Basically, unlike Morrowind a mod that changes, lets say an NPC, will not alter an entry, but instead overwrite the default entry. Thus, if you use a mod that gives an NPC a different inventory and one that changes it's face, you will only have the last loaded result which is different from how things used to be. FOMM will allow you to change the load order of mods, all you then need to know is what they change and anticipate where the conflicts will be, and for that previous modding experience will help a lot :P

But anyway, I'd recommend using Mart's Mutant Mod, Weapon Mod Kits and FOOK2.0 (with the bug fixes found on their website, the newest 2.5 is still incompatible with a lot of mods) to start off with, those will broaden the vanilla gameplay quite extensively without changing the game in something it's not. I'd definitely recommend not installing every single mod in one go anyway, but taking steps in enhancing the process as you progress with new games. GNR - More Where That Came From are also a must-have if you like that radio station, and Existence 2.0 Radio for if you get bored of it. They're all on the nexus, and pretty high rated as well etcetera.

If you haven't played the DLC's before, take this one as well. Stops them from screaming IM A DLC EXTRA ADDON TO FALLOUT and makes them actually integrated in the wasteland a bit more.

Load order is explained here: http://www.fallout3nexus.com/articles/article.php?id=145

In short, it's the order you load your mods in FOMM to avoid conflicts, and to make sure files that are dependent on other files are loaded in the appropriate order.

No matter what mods you decide to use, make sure you get FOMM (Fallout Mod Manager) and FOSE (Fallout Script Editor). Not only will they make your life much easier, they're required for nearly all the best mods.

Personally, I'd recommend FOOK2, a body replacer for both sexes (most have a non-nude version if you prefer keeping it clean), vanilla armor conversions for those bodies, some environmental mods like Fellout, Enhanced Weather and GreenWorld (if you're like me and think after 200 years there'd probably be some grass and trees around), maybe a hi-res texture replacer since you have a high end pc, the GNR radio station expansion mentioned eariler (get all 100 songs - it makes a huge difference!); and just play the game and you'll get ideas for mods you would like to have. Then just look em up, and you'll find they've probably already been done. Also, as already mentioned, check the top 100 and you'll find some really good stuff! But I'd recommend starting with essentials like FOOK (essential imo at least) and some aesthetic upgrades and see where that takes you. Just play and browse the Nexus and before you know it you're game will be pretty heavily modded. :)

Also, get yourself DarNifiedUI... unless you like your pc games to look like console games! :yucky:
