urgh...that's ugly...never ran across one that destroyed a BIOS. Figured those evil stinkers would come up with that eventually.

EDIT by LHammonds: It is an old and dirty trick born out of hate. I saw one myself in 1995.

lHammonds - Is MalwareBytes free version can do it? Because it says you can download it, but to get a full version you have to pay it.

And to people about COMODO, I use COMODO firewall.

Sorry for short replies, I'm just quite busy.

@ LHammonds : It would be wise to add those new steps in your list as sometimes you will be faced with some unwanted effects and problems if you make a new install - especially when the anti-virus program is a different one. The best is to have a complete clean-up before making a new anti-virus install. :wink:

  1. Download the new anti-virus program.
  2. Download any manual updates you can find for the virus definitions for that program.
  3. Disconnect your Internet cable from your PC.
  4. Uninstall your current anti-virus program.

  5. Delete manually files and also empty folders from your previous anti-virus program install.
  6. Run CCleaner or a similar program to completely clean up your registry from obsolete keys that may stay.

  7. Reboot (necessary to complete uninstall)
  8. Install new anti-virus program & update the definition files if possible.
  9. Reboot and allow it to fully scan your system.
  10. Re-connect your Internet cable.
  11. Tell your anti-virus program to update itself immediately.
  12. Perform another scan if updates are applied.
  13. Make sure your scanner is setup to fully scan your system at least once a week (preferably when you know the PC will be on and when it will be OK for the scanner to run)

Also, if you must use such sites, make sure you are using a PC that you don't mind loosing control over to a hacker and such. Another potential solution would be to isolate your web browsing with a program like Sandboxie.

@Omeleter : here's a link to Malwarebytes Anti-Malware but it's a shareware and you have to pay for full protection features.

Key Features:

* Support for Windows 2000, XP, and Vista (32-bit only).

* Light speed quick scanning.

* Ability to perform full scans for all drives.

* Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Protection Module. (requires registration)

* Database updates released daily.

* Quarantine to hold threats and restore them at your convenience.

* Ignore list for both the scanner and Protection Module.

* Settings to enhance your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware performance.

* A small list of extra utilities to help remove malware manually.

* Multi-lingual support.

* Works together with other anti-malware utilities.

* Command line support for quick scanning.

* Context menu integration to scan files on demand.

It would be usefull to download and install it for cleaning your PC from unwanted files but you have to register for being protected.

Hope it could help.

One last thing, before installing any anti-virus software that promises results, you should ALWAYS do some research about that program to make sure it's safe and reliable to use. And, ALL research done should be on 3rd party sites who are not affiliated with the program and who aren't paid for their endorsements. http://www.cnet.com/ and http://majorgeeks.com/ are too reliable sources when it comes to software. But ALWAYS look around and google the program to see what is being said about it. A rogueware company might be able to fool Bing or force their way into the top 2-3 responses on Google, but other ones will usually tell you better.
