The Death of Ser Jory

So... apparently this is a pretty hot and sensitive subject. This caused a huge flame war over on TVtropes, as well as several other gaming forums.

So I'm interested to know what YOU guys think about this. What is your opinion about Duncan's killing of Jory?

Personally I think it was wrong. I feel that it was completely unnecessary to kill Jory, and honestly my heart bleeds for him, his wife, and his poor child every time I watch the cutscene. He would have been a great Warden, I'm sure.

Well there is one thing that we all would agree on, this needs to be in the spoiler section. We can not answer your question Lehcar if you place it on general discussion as there is nothing general about it and it would reveal a lot of spoilers early from the game. There are people who have not played DO:A and this would ruin their game play. Please understand that I'm not flaming or troiling or anything towards you but pointing out there is a spoiler section for a reason and it would help if this was moved.

well dude you gotta look at it this way, if jory would have been allowed to walk away and return to the wife he abandoned, they risk the joining becoming public, and everything that led up to that, anything related to the wardens and their activities

the ritual is kept secret for very good reason, just imagine friend if you will, what would happen if no-glory jory starts telling people that wardens Drink Darkspawn blood, the stigma slash rumors slash ignorance slash anythnig you could think of (picture the general population having the wisdom/perception/intelligence of the bandit's side kick in loithering when you first reach town, "even if you aint a refugee, u still gotta pay the toll", that guy) would immediately be used against them, and mr loghain would ride that vomit-fest so hard and perhaps even get more noble allies on his side, them believing king C was betrayed,. etc etc, etcccccccccc oh my goodness thank god duncan did what he did or this game would have been a first person shooter - everyone attacking you on sight :p

And once again we come back to the fact that in war, bad things happen. The necessary act is not always the "right" act. Both Riordan and Levi Dryden from the Soldier's Keep DLC make a point of emphasizing that, to quote Levi, "The Wardens do what they must."

I'm not nearly so upset over the killing of Ser Jory to protect the secrecy of the Joining as I am the lack of continuity of that act to Awakening where apparently the details of the Joining are so well known they become public banter and the ceremony itself is administered by a non-Warden.

Ser Jory was warned (as was Davith and the PC) that there was "no turning back" I'm not sure what part of that he didn't understand. Additionally, he was the one that drew his weapon first - a threatening act in and of itself leaving Duncan in a position where he must defend himself. (I won't mention anything about Jory's two-handed blade turning into a longsword though.. ooops I did anyway.)

yeah, this was a hot topic here, a while back too.

While the party is in the wilds, Alistair has a line about "Zap! Then you're a frog". Its too bad morrigan didnt change him into an ACTUAL chicken, then we could have had him for dinner. At least then the chicken**** would have been of some worth.

Yeah, pretty much. What part of "There's no turning back" did he not get? Was he too busy cleaning out his drawers when Duncan said that?

Duncan did what he had to do. It's pretty much forshadowing that life in wardens isnt all glitz and glamour, and that being a warden means having to do things you dont necessarily want to. And that hard choices have to be made.

There was also the argument that Duncan should have let him go home to his wife that was expecting. Gee.... if he was so concerned about his wife and unborn....WHY did he leave them in the first place? Fighting DS? Gee, that sounds REALLY dangerous to Me!

It's not really fair to bust on Jory too much. First of all, if Duncan wanted he could have just drafted Jory. We actually dont really know if Jory chose to be a Warden or was forced. Could have been one of those volunteer or else kind of deals. (Actually I think he won a tourny but still).

As for running off to fight a war while his wife was expecting... Duncan probably used that fact against him when he was recruited. I can hear it now. Duncan saying stuff like "If we dont stop the Dark Spawn what will happen to your wife and child." People have been going to war, putting themselves at risk for that very reason forever.

Is Jory one of my favorite charactors... no, not really; but he is one of the most human. he has doubts, he has conflicting emotions and feelings. He wants to protect his family and do his duty but he has limits. Sounds like pretty much everyone I served with when I was in the military if truth be told.

I can understand why Duncan did what he did, doesnt mean I have to like it or approve. Especially when the truth about the Wardens is reveled later in the story. They certinly arent the knights in shining armor they pretend to be.

The Grey Wardens have NEVER pretended to be knights of any sort, let alone ones in shining armour. This quote from Riordan sums it up:

"We aren't judges. Kinslayers, blood mages, traitors, rebels, carta thugs, common bandits; Anyone with the skill and mettle to take up the sword against the darkspawn is welcome among us."

ANYONE, knights AND murderers...
