Cant get mods to work

First off all, this is my first post here... so hello everyone! :)

Okay, so here's the issue:

I've been playing Oblivion alot on the xbox 360, but recently I got bored of it due to the fact that you cant mod it.

So! I got it for PC and started downloading this mod called 'Alternate Start Revamped'. I also downloaded this Oblivion Mod Manager (ODMM) cause I read that people said it was recommended.

I saved this Alternate Start Revamped mod in the data folder (Oblivion\\Data), and that is where the .esp file is aswell. I've been reading around and I simply cannot see anything that I've done wrong!

I started the game, and the mod didnt seem to work. So I tried with another one (unzipped it in the data folder). Not to my surprise, this one didnt work either!

Now the funny thing is that they DO show up in the Oblivion Launcher when I press Data Files, and yes... they are enabled :p

But they just dont show up ingame.

So basically: The .esp is in the Data folder, the mod shows up (and is enabled) when I look at the Data Files, but it will not do anything ingame.

I hope someone understood what I described here :p

EDIT: I'm running Vista 64bit

Thanks in advance

If your oblivion is installed in the default directory (c:\Program Files (x86)\), you will need to uninstall it and reinstall in a different directory - such as c:\games. It is a known issue with the "enhanced" security models with Win Vista and Win 7.

Yes, that is the first answer and the practical sine quae non - and applies to every game.

Still the central point was not addressed. OBMM (I think is that is told) is not a mod, it has many functions but it's not a mod and does not install in /data.

One the most common and useful such functions being easy load order change (the ESM/ESP's position in the list) as to tick them as active or deactivated. So, once you have OBMM you should avoid using the "Data files" on the launcher... actually you should avoid the launcher at all.

Even because when you install OBSE you NEVERMORE should start the game from there. Delete this icon from your desktop and replace it by a shortcut pointing to Oblivion.exe. Notice if for any reason you want the launcher you can always do it from the game folder, still the only reason I can see one wanting to use it is to change the game Options, a very rare occurrence once it ran once.

The actual issue, is almost certainly resolved following Shadowfen's instruction.

PS: that implies you should avoid starting the game from the DVDs autorun too.

Ahhh... I see! I do indeed have it installed in the x86 folder! I thought that might be the issue, but I assumed it couldnt be since Morrowind mods works fine from the x86 folder!

Many thanks for the replies...

Nosisab: I know ODMM is not a mod, but a mod manager ^^ However, thanks for clearing up that I should not use the launcher when I have it installed! :)
