Oblivion crashing

Recommended Posts

Hey, I installed Oblivion today, and instead of having fun, been having stress and frustration for a few hours now.

In the beginning, when the first attack takes place, everything goes well. Right after then, when you've been told to stay put and everybody else leaves the room, the game crashes to desktop.

I'm using Windows 7, 64bit, 2,1GHz dual core and 4Gb RAM. No additional mods are installed and got the latest patch. No programs are running in the background. I tried with all settings, and still nothing. It just always always crashes at that point.

So, does anybody know how I can get this thing to work, or shall I have to put the game on the "wanted to, but turned out to be impossible to play" list?

Right now, I'm waiting for the unofficial patch to finish downloading. Will take another 15 minutes... Let's hope that fixes it.

That seems to be in the point a few rats breaks the weakened wall and attacks you (just after the emperor and entourage leaves the area). Still that does not lights the little lamp, I never saw reports of this issue before with such constance. It may be totally unrelated but is something you can try. One the blades always dies there, the female official and she will have two swords you can use (one being a very good at this point, an Akaviri katana than sadly you can't keep at the end of the tutorial).

Try grabbing both, the steel short sword and the katana before the party leaves the stage.

Complement: It's never too much to stress: In Windows Vista and 7 never, NEVER, install games at the C:\Program Files folder (that sadly is the default). It applies to Oblivion and any other game. The reasons are explained in many threads by now.

It may not be the case here, but as said, never will be too much repeat it.

Tried that, didn't work.

I just finished downloading the unofficial patch. Took a bit longer than 15 minutes. Anyways, that didn't solve the problem either.

Crashes on the exact same moment during a new game as well.

There is a reason for that "Privacy statement", so we can't really do good use from the informations in that message.

What is going to bring some light in the issue is you reporting the hardware you use, the video card among the more meaningful.

It seems related more with drivers than something in game since you report no mods at all there.

Still The exact point where it occurs is not clear. The moment Balrus uses the words "stay put prisoner" is while in the prison cell, before the emperor speech and before the secret door is activated. Yet the first battle occurs a bit ahead and the words would be something like "don't try following us" and the entourage pass by a door that is locked afterwards. That is the point where the first assassins are met and Captain Renaut dies.

Knowing exactly the point the issue occurs can help but need to be precise, still I believe those informations about CPU, video, sound card and the like, will be more useful.

Hardware:

Brand-spanking new laptop (HP Pavilion DV6):

Pentium dual-core CPU T4300 2.10GHz

4Gb RAM

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

ATI Mobility Radeon 4650

Dedicated video memory: 1024Mb

The place it crashes is when that one guard tells you to stay put, right after you're attacked by three assassins, that one guard captain dies and the emperor and the other remaining guard moved through the gate already. He only says it if you come close enough, though. If you stay far away, he'll just wait at the bottom of the stairs and nothing happens at all.

Gonna see if I can do a video driver upgrade, although that'd be stupid as this thing's only a week old, so not the newest drivers on a new machine'd be stupid.

Got the latest drivers (were 3 days old) and installed them, then tried again. Still crashes. I can hear squeeling for a fraction of a second, though, so I guess it's right at the rats thing mentioned earlier.

The aurora engine, the same for Oblivion as for Fallout (with adaptations of course) is extremely sensible to sound issues. That is the direction I point now. Try new drivers for it too.

I'm not up to date with ATI video cards but I think that one reported should be enough to play the game at reasonable graphics settings.

That's the point where people experienced with notebooks will be more helpful than I ever could be.

One place you could try to get some light is at the "Event Viewer" under the "System" messages log. You can access it from the Control panel and from there inside the "Administrative tools"

look for red marked messages, those are normally quoted as error or critical, will be many others informative messages there you can ignore in a first approach.

PS: That last advice can shed some light on possibles others issues in the system which the user would never know existed other way.

I get an error when I try to start Windows Event Logger (need to start that, cause Event Viewer says it needs that service). I think I might as well throw Win7 out and get good ol' XP back. I'm getting quite tired of all this.
