OBSE Issue

I joined the forums a while back and had a bit of trouble with mods. Most notably, OBSE. I recently downloaded obse_0018 and am still having a bit of trouble in getting it to work. I downloaded Oblivion through Steam and am currently running Windows 7 as an OS. As instructed by the readme, I copied the obse_1_2_416.dll, obse_editor_1_2.dll, and obse_steam_loader.dll files to the Oblivion folder. As well as the SRC folder. I didn't copy the individual files from it, rather I copied and pasted the folders over. Except of course for the files I mentioned previously. I was told that I should click the OBSE Loader whenever I want to start Oblivion, so I attempted to do so and was met with this error: "You are trying to run the Steam version of Oblivion, please read the instructions in the obse_readme.txt etc etc."

I'm quite sure I haven't missed anything. I haven't downloaded any spells that would require the use of the OBSE but I figured I'd get it working first and foremost. Any suggestions?

The file copying part was fine, but you read the wrong section when looking for how to start Oblivion (Steam) with OBSE:

If you are using the Steam version of the game:

2. OBSE will automatically be run along with Oblivion when launched. To disable this, rename or move obse_steam_loader.dll. You do not need to use obse_loader.exe unless you are running the editor.

Ah, so it's run in the background or something? When I download something or attempt to install something which requires OBSE to work (Deadly Reflexes for example) how exactly would I go about utilizing it? That may sound like a n00b question but I want to cover all bases.

I presume that it is loaded automatically, but I don't run the steam version myself so I must trust the readme. <g> Accordingly, once the obse dlls are in place for the steam version, you should be able to select mods that require obse and they should just work.

(They should just work setting aside other factors such as load orders and mod conflicts of course. <g>)

What I think I have heard is that Steam users ONLY need to copy the Steam DLL over into the Oblivion folder. After that, you can launch the game as usual. Maybe I read incorrectly. The only other option, then, is for Steam user to copy ALL of the DLLs (and not the EXE) into the Oblivion folder. Still, you only have to launch with your normal shortcut. OBSE is installed at that point, so you can use OBSE mods just as everyone else does.

Well, to test the placement of my OBSE files I downloaded Deadly Reflexes 5 and I can't actually start a new game. I've the Deadly Reflexes and 150% damage boxes checked going in. Also when attempting to load a different file Oblivion crashes. Perhaps I placed a few files differently...

If you do not figure out the problem, I can probably figure out the OBSE Steam thing tomorrow. My brain is fried because it is already after 3AM here. You are probably right in guessing that OBSE is not working properly. You may want to try a simpler OBSE-dependent mod to verify that... "Ring of Console" would make an easy test. (Search for it on TESNexus.)

You guessed correctly. OBSE patches Oblivion.exe in memory, it does so it can intercept and execute OBSE functions which otherwise would cause problems to the original executable. So you must use the obse_loader.exe.

So, if you are able to launch it you can be sure it works, if your game works before installing obse dependent mods (notice you can use OBSE in that case too) when launching the game from the obse_loader that means everything is alright. If you installs some mod and it does not work, it's not an OBSE problem, it may be a mod's problem but probably is just a mod's installation problem.

PS: Deadly Reflex need a certain ESM related to mounted combat to be installed and loaded (activated), EVEN if the feature is not used. The lacking implies in immediate crash. That applies for any lacking ESM which is referenced by any ESP.

I have seen many posts claiming that OBSE was causing crashes. I don't remember a single one where it was not an OBSE dependent mod that caused the crash. OBSE is a nearly foolproof utility program (not a mod) With very few problems. Once properlyinstalled, you don't have to do anything except start the game with it . - As Noisab said, "So, if you are able to launch it you can be sure it works."

As already stated Deadly Reflex is not a good mod for testing OBSE. It is a complex mod with many ways it can fail that are not OBSE related. The ring of console suggested by TomLong is a good choice as it is a simple mod but still requires OBSE to work. If OBSE works with that it will work with any mod.

Well, as I said before I can't launch the OBSE Loader without seeing said error. However, I can easily run Oblivion by actually selecting the program itself. I was led to believe that some type of prompt should greet me when running the loader, though since I'm running the Steam version of Oblivion I assume everything's fine then. I got Rens Beauty mod to work successfully, however Deadly Reflexes still doesn't work. I assume I need to pick up the ESM for the Horse Combat mod then?

-Update- I tried the Ring of Console mod and it was successfully added to my inventory. I'm assuming that means my OBSE file is working and I do need the Combat ESM then~
