I will be installing windows 7 soon and need advice on the easy and best way to get my game, and mods installed on windows 7. I think what I need to do is

1. install game & Shirvering Isle

2.install DLC packs

3. Install latest unofficial patch

4. Install official latest patch (I don't have to install all those other patch's first do I?

5.install mods using MOD manager

Because this is a clean install and I can have my current" My Documents" moved to the new system do I put all the MODS into a folder in My Documents. Some of them are no longer on the site here and others are older versions I like. Can some kind person give me the best way to get the game into a windows 7 clean install from XP Pro as I never did like upgrades.

thanks in advance

1. install game & Shirvering Isle - not to the Program directory (or anything spelled even remotely like it)

2. Install official Shivering Isles 1.2.0416 patch

3. install DLC packs

4. Install all the unofficial patchs (3 primary and one patch for a patch)

5. install mods using MOD manager - aka OBMM

6 . Run BOSS - as found on Tesnexus

suggested changes in the quote.

  •
  • Don't forget to install Oblivion to a directory other than the default path; or disable the UAC or your mods probably won't work.
  • Mods don't go in My Documents. Mods go in the Data folder in your main Oblivion directory. Back up your Data directory.

Edit: Probably the only things you'll want to backup from My documents are your .ini file (to keep your settings) and your save games.

I am putting a lot of patch's and MOD's from various games in folders in "My Documents" because it can be moved in windows 7. The install of Windows 7 will reformat the disk and install a new OS. Many of my MOD's for Oblivion are no longer available and I think this is the only way to save them so after I install the game in Windows I can move the MOD's and other old XP stuff back into the games they came from as they will be running under the XP emulation (or what ever they call it)......is this not true?

After installing the new windows 7 OS I would install the game by putting the disk in the drive and it woud create its own directory in C as I do not partition so I am not sure what you are refering to in poit 1 above.

Copy your saved mods onto DVD's or a remote hard drive before you upgrade your operating system. If you use the remote harddrive make sure it is not going to be affected by your upgrade-unplug it from your computer. Windows Seven does not use an emulator for XP, it is an "upgrade" of the operating system of XP and Vista.Fonger is warning you about a little program called User Account Control or UAC.It makes Vista and Seven very unfriendly for games installed under C:Program Files.

let me see if I have this right. I save the MOD install files or can I just copy the files themselves onto a folder on my backup drive which I have. I am sorry for being so stupid here but after I get 7 installed how and where do I install the games if I have only a C partition? I thought if I install the pro edition I could install my games from XP Pro with no problem. I will get this sorted out eventually.

Since you have a remote harddrive (1) Copy the My Games folder onto your remote hard drive.(2) Copy Everything inside the C:Program Files/Bethesda Softworks onto your remote hard drive. (3) Copy every download for Oblivion onto your remote hard drive.(4) Install your new OS.(5)Copy your "My Games" back into Documents,Copy your downloads back into Downloaded Files, when installing Oblivion from your remote hard drive onto your computer you should install Oblivion in C:Games/Oblivion or C:I hate UAC/Oblivion. Just remember to tell a program like j-zip or 7-zip what file to place your new downloads into and to create a shortcut for Wrye Bash or OBSE on your desktop..
