Grunker
Hi. My friend gets CTD's with "out of memory" messages every 20 minutes or so playing New Vegas. He has some basic gameplay mods like Mission Mojave and Project Nevada, as well as a bunch of graphics mode, though no really backbreaking ones. Chief among them are EVE, Electro City, NMC Texture Pack (medium) and Nevada Skies. He also has some miscellanous stuff like Stutter Remover. In total he has around 25 mods. Now, I'm thinking the crashes might actually simply be due to his 4GB of memory. After playing for 15 minutes, his memory load is around 73%. I don't know much about hardware though and I don't want to tell him to buy something new if that's not the problem. The load order is BOSS approved and the installation was by the book. Anyone care to offer a guess? :) Thanks in advance.
WhiskeyRiver2
Does he only have 4 gigs of RAM? I'd recommend giving FNV 4GB a try - even with only 4 gigs of RAM on your machine, that program can be a big help by allowing NV to suck more than the default 2 gigs. Could also try freeing up RAM by shutting down unused programs via the task manager. If all else fails, a new high-can (8 gig or better) RAM stick can be had for ~$150 and is usually stupid-simple to install. I'm actually looking into upgrading my laptop's RAM right now, try and squeak a little more performance out of it.

This functionality was patched in to the core game as I understand it, At least all sources say so. However I think he actually did install it, so there's that. Yeah, only 4 gigs. Could also try freeing up RAM by shutting down unused programs via the task manager. All is shut down. If all else fails, a new high-can (8 gig or better) RAM stick. Don't have to tell me bro, but he's leery of upgrading.
WhiskeyRiver2
Leery how? Afraid he'll screw something up? Upgrading RAM is no more difficult than changing a lightbulb. Hardest part is getting to the stupid card in the first place. Double-check that he installed FNV4GB properly, and if that's done right, then his only option is to either upgrade RAM or lose some mods.
Grunker
FNV4GB is not needed on this patch according to every source I can find. FNV is capable of using more than 4 gigs. Leery as in he's a miser ;)
WhiskeyRiver2
No offense intended, but if he wants to run a half-decently modded game, he has no option but upgrading RAM. And what patch are you talking about? I'm running the latest Steam version, and I still needed FNV4GB.

It made sense to me since Skyrim was patchee in a similar way last year. My friend did have it installed though, just checked.
