Can't install more mods than 157. Wtf?

This is the first post I make on this forum so go easy on me. Also I hope this forum is still somewhat active.

To get to the point, I can't install more than 157 mods. I spent a good hour trying to figure out why and I don't know.

If I install more than 157, the game loads until the Bethesda logo, then blackscreens and I have to close the task through task manager.

The moment I go back to 157, everything's good. Doesn't matter what mods.

This is the weirdest thing and beyond my scope. I'm usually pretty good at troubleshooting.

You're my only hope, Nexus Forums.

The theoretical absolute limit would be 255 mods. But most people are finding a limit around 140 mods depending on their specs and on the types of mods loading. (heavily scripted, 4k textures, clean and well done or ...)

What you're experiencing is quite common.

If this is true, this is incredibly disappointing.

A lot of mods are just little tweaks or added weapons that take up spot. Bah.

Is this the same with Skyrim? I'll be playing it again soon.

I understand your disappointment, but everything has its limit!

Going through the (tedious) process of cleaning mods and merging them can help you on this issue.

Make some search about merging...

I don't play Skyrim but a quick search give the same story. 255 absolute limit, different limit for different people with different machines and mods blend.

Also, it is one thing to install mods, it is another to have them coexist without conflict and CTD every 10 min ...

All Bethesda's moddable games to date have the 255 limit. It includes esm files as well as esp, however a large number of bsa files can also cause serious problems.

Merging is the only answer which is why I'm still pissed it wasn't included in a simple manner in Skyrim like it has been in all other TES games (I can't speak for the Fallout games, I use relatively few mods for them).

Although the theoretical limit for any moddable game by Bethesda is 255, there is a certain limit that starts becoming impractical unless you know exactly what you're doing and have a computer that can handle it, and even that's no guarantee. Also, New Vegas seems to have a bit of a bug in the engine that makes the mod limit somewhere within the 140-160 plugin range. If you want more mods than that you need to merge the plugins using Wrye Flash or similar programs.

Trust me, I spent many days pulling my hair out over this.
