Smooz
After spending 3 hours searching for an answer without a solution, my last resort is the expertise of the nexus. My new Alienware m11x laptop doesn't come with an optical drive. I own the original retail fallout 3 and managed to install it by using an elaborate setup with the dvd drive from my pc and an IDE to USB converter. Proceeded to patch it to 1.7 and install all of the mods I'm used to. However, after removing the drive and all the cables, fallout is unable to play, regardless of starting fallout.exe or FOSE. I've tried two nocd .exe replacers but with those, FOSE returns an error saying it doesn't recognise a correct fallout.exe. My next attempt was trying to rip the cd and mounting it, but that didn't get me anywhere either. No matter what, it hangs up before the game loads. It doesn't even leave the desktop. I'd really like to kill some raiders when on vacation, without having to carry 6 lbs of cables and dvd drive with me, and can't afford a small external optical drive right now. Is there any way for me to play? Specs: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bitFallout retail, patched to 1.7 (Not GOTY/steam/anything)Notable mods and tools include FOMM, FOSE 1.2 beta 2, FWE and about 15 minor assorted modsDaemon Tools Lite is installed, but I don't think that's causing any issues.I'll provide any extra information that is needed, and can prove ownership of the game if requested. Quetzlsacatanango
I don't think there is anything verboten about this information...I'm pretty sure that only the launcher checks for the CD. so if you launch your game via FOMM or even directly from the fallout3 or fose.exe, it doesn't check for a cd in the drive. So if you are doing this and you are still having a problem, it's probably not related to a missing cd.I can't verity it at the moment so apologies in advance if I am wrong about this. Smooz
Just reread my first post, and I should have been more specific. I try to start it using FOMM -> Start FOSE. These are the errors I get: With nothing extra running, no virtual drives, no cracks, just the game+mods: "No CD/DVD drive found." With one virtual drive, to trick it into thinking I have a cd/dvd drive: "No CD/DVD found. Insert the original Fallout 3 CD/DVD"When using a crack (what other choice would I have?): "You have an unknown version of Fallout. Please check http://fose.silverlock.org to make sure you're using the latest version of FOSE." I get the same errors when trying fallout.exe or falloutlauncher.exe. Both FOMM and FOSE are running in administrator mode and are the latest versions I know of.
phoneyLogic
Hm, but Quetzlsacatanango and Fonger are right. You might have used a crack or a manipulated exe somehow. FOMM starts the original files without any problems. So you may need to reinstall and this time, don't use any cracks. Vanilla legal game + official patch 1.7 + FOSE + FOMM = working game
Smooz
It's possible I backed up the wrong exe when I patched it. I'll reinstall tomorrow morning and come back here with results. Thanks for the quick replies, guys.
Smooz
Completely un- and reinstalled it. Vanilla 1.7 showed me the exact same "No CD/DVD drive found" message. I'm guessing, without a drive, I won't be able to play at all. Should I bother emailing someone at Bethesda?
phoneyLogic
Can't you start the game via the Fallout3.exe?Hmm, you may need the launcher to create your ini settings and configs in the My Games folder ...

Smooz
That worked! It now crashes after 1 second into the intro, which I believe is an FDDShow conflict, but I have faith I can sort that out. Thanks so much for the help, guys!
