Castle Wars

Soo I have been lately trying to start working on a mod. I have been having tons of idieas from epic story quests to impossible arenas. But i doubt i could do any of those projects alone. Specially without using any kind of scripts.

 

Soo i came with this one called Castle Wars. The name says it. The player will be able to get a ruined and deserted castle wich contains a village, barracks, stables,blacksmight and much more. The player then haves to rebuild the castle and get people for he's village and recruit soldiers. This would allow the player to actually become a king, having he's own village to take care and he's own private army. This looks very interesting the first time, but what would you do with an army? I was thinking of adding more Castles owned by NPC making the player having wars with these other kings. Creating Epic Scale battles. Or i was thinking of also making some Bandit Raiding Partys or goblin partys attacking the player's castle wich he would then have to defend or loose he's castle.

 

Some Features:

 

-The Player would have to rebuild the entire castle and village again.

-The soldiers would be made using the CM Partners mod wich allows the player to actually command he's army!

-The Village could have some quests for the player to do for the village.

-You can give any equipment to your soldiers.

-The soldier recruitment would be trought a special NPC that could gather other NPC with their own skills. Example: You want archers. Just tell the NPC to find some people that are good with bows. And then they could train at your castle to lvl up their skills.

-Take your army EVERYWHERE. Soo if you want to assault a cave with 20 man, you can.

 

I've always wanted something like this in Oblivion. I think other people would want it aswell. :)

 

But now i need your opinions on this. :)

As for your idea. Id like building up my own wee castle, it could be pretty fun, but it would be hard to impliment, I think :3

And for epic castle seiges, I couldnt do them, my fps drops through the floor when doing the last misssion, where you fight outside the great gate. Too many NPC's for my computer :mellow:

That's also something that worries me a little, only powerfull computers will be able to handle the full action. Maybe I can brew up a solution.

 

Implementing the Castle and the soldiers is quite eazy. But making those raiding partys is not. How to make a raiding party come every week or something attack your castle is quite something i have to see. :) Also making another castle with NPC's is something that needs thinking too, because it had to be a quest for the castle to become yours, otherwise the castle would be always spawning enemies.

Even with a powerful computer the game engine chokes with around 15 characters moving at once. So your epic armies would be limited to about 7 per side. You would also have to make all of the material for seiging, animations for things like scaling walls and such. The AI isn't very bright and path grids would have to be made to allow them to go to places they normally don't, like over walls.

 

Bandit parties attacking is very doable, as long as the combined total of bandits and defenders is less than 15 or so. This is done in a mod called Feudal Empire 300 http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22678 (previously called Knights of the White Stallion)

 

Building up a castle is possible, but the multiple versions of the castle in various states of repair would be very time consuming. For an example of how to do this see Kvatch Rebuilt http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15412

 

To see a real castle with archers that have an AI that has them actually defend the walls and a working portcullis see Glenvar Castle http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8235

 

Most of what you want can be done by incorporating the ideas and techniques from these other mods into one.

I made some tests about the max number of NPC on 2 comp. And this is what i got:

 

Human Guards- between 10-15 guards max.

Monsters:-Goblins- Over 40 goblins and no lag

-Minotaurs- Over 25-30 and no lag

 

Strangely the game can't suport a big number of human characters, but it can support a whole army of monsters. This changes my plans then.

 

I won't make castle siege, it will look a little weird seeing an battle of like 10 NPC. But the goblin invasions i think it will be nice.

 

I used Glenvar Castle, i liked everything except the part that you can't walk around with the guards. My ideia still stands but i will have to change what i really wan't to do. Thanks for letting me know of the NPC max.

On Glenvar Castle you can walk all the way around the castle on the wall. I have never actually tried to accompany a guard on his rounds, but I have stood alongside of an archer on the platform above the gate shooting at a minotaur on the ground outside.

But you cant grab them all and assault the imperial city for example.

Hey, I had and idea for you npc problem. Can you possibly have just a few people fighting and when someone dies another respawns until you troop limit is reached. Have you ever played battlefield, if so i was thinking you could do something like that. Idk if that is possible though. I had a very similar idea btw.
