I need more space!

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to free up some space on my hard drive, as I have some new games I think might be fun. When I tried to install them, the dreaded "There's not enough space on the hard drive to complete this operation" message comes up.

Now, my computer is already packed as much as I can with extra memory (I have a paltry total of 160 gb, which makes me want to attack my brother for having a 1 tb hard drive from his grandmother). I'm religiously uninstalling games I don't think I'll ever be able to complete due to how insanely hard they are (I suck at video games), like GTA:SA, Neverwinter Nights, and Call of Cthulhu (Spelled it right!).

Now, I checked the add and remove programs file, and according to it, the 3 largest files (Other than WoW, which I hate but need on the computer for reference), are..

  • Oblivion - Construction Set: 16,102 mb
  • Oblivion Mod Manager 1.1.12: 16,102 mb
  • Oblivion: 11,173 mb

According to that, Oblivion is taking up over 47 gigs of data. Is that actually how much space it takes up? Is there any way to take down that huge filesize (which I haven't seen since GTA 4 messed up installing and repeatedly installed one model a few hundred thousand times, bumping up the size of it to 50 gbs)?

you could try defragmenting the pc and using a tool called 'disc cleanup' to see if that frees up

if you dont know where they are :

vista/windows 7 - click start - all programs - accessories - system tools

xp - click start - program files - all programs - accessories - system tools

hope xp is right as i dont have it no more

if that dont help just look in all your files like documents and wherever else you might have put some stuff

I'm looking at mine now and it says that Oblivion is 8GB and so are the DLCs, the Construction set, and so forth. Add/Remove Programs sees those as separate files I guess but it still registers it as a part of Oblivion...or it's weird because you can mod the game...not sure. If you go to where Oblivion is installed and check the folder, that's how big it is...mine's lol 14GB  Biggest thing I have on my HDD

Hmm, sheesh lol I've used a total of 80GB on my 250GB lol...I don't keep a lot of stuff really. Do you save installs/patches for games you don't have? Some of those are huge. I used to save updates for Anarchy Online back in the day...my 50GB partition had 20GB of AO backups lol. Do you save installs for programs you don't use? Stuff like that can be pretty big.

lol come on man just get rid of WoW  It's not good for you  Prolly taking up a huge amount of space...I remember it being like 10GB when I tried it...on my 20GB HDD

Or, if you could come up with $45 you can get a 250GB HDD...or for$69 you could get yourself a 1TB HDD...wow a few months ago they were $90.

I don't play it, it's just for reference. My subscription timed out on September.. 28th, I think, of 2009. I do hate it how I need it to be fully updated just to get the mapviewer to work.

I'm not exactly sure how to add more memory, it's a crappy cheap computer that's already got its memory slots stuffed.

Hehe, you're confusing me lol. You can always add another hard drive. Memory is RAM...Random Access Memory. The Hard Drive is the storage. Stuff is read from the hard drive, which is sent to the RAM, and then to the CPU.

It's easy to install a new HDD. Pretty much all you have to do is plug it in to the PSU, plug the data cable in the motherboard, and turn it on  Windows will recognize the drive but it needs to be formatted. So you go to My Computer, right click on the new drive, and go to Format. Tick "quick format", let it do it's business...and it's ready to go

What kind of computer you got?

A 160GB hard drive sounds like you may have a laptop. Not quite as easy to upgrade the HD as a desk top but still not difficult. The hardest part is moving all of your 'stuff' such as operating system and data from the old to the new drive. On a desktop it's easy to run the drives in parallel - both drives installed in the case.

On a laptop there is usually only one place to put a hard drive so you must have a way to hook up another hard drive to make the transfer. A usb to hard drive cable will work - - it's a short USB cable the plugs into a bare hard drive and allows you to move data from one to another.

you can get them from many suppliers such as TigerDirect or NewEgg in the US

A good FREE program to move your system & data to a new disk is Easeus Partition Master Home Edition - available here: http://majorgeeks.com/EASEUS_Partition_Master_Home_Edition_d5967.html

nope... you need more space in order to save space...uhh... yes, i know it sounds confusing.

if you have a LOT of mods like i do, chances are your data folder is way above 40gb. but you can cut that to HALF if you pack most of it into a BSA. but for that you need somewhere to ditch it in the first place. if you use obmm i think it is safe to create it using these settings (compress all and medium) you can compress most meshes and nearly all textures. pay special attention to the sounds folder (a major space hog) chances are it is full of silent mp3s you don't really need if you use Ely's Silent voice mod and most of those weigh 3 to 6 mb a piece. which can build up to ridiculous ammouts

with the meshes just make sure you leave out anything that replaces vanilla meshes (body replacers, hairs, animations, stock armors remade, any _far.nif) and that's about it.

good luck packing.

Nope, it's not a laptop. Just a cheap desktop.

Here's a link to the specifications on my computer. They're the same as that one except I upgraded a video card.

I'll see what I can do for getting another drive into the case.
