game consistently crashing

i've asked a friend about it, and he says it may or may not be a corruption.

basically, it started with non-existent tree bark textures. then, after maybe an hour of play, the game would just exit out, no message or anything. now it just crashes whenever i open the game.

anybody know what to do?

Did you try verifying your files on Steam? This will re-download any corrupted or missing files and your textures should come back.

If it's crashing on start up it could also mean you are missing a master file. Do you use mods? Have you uninstalled any during a playthrough? While this is usually okay for textures, mods you uninstalled may have other mods that are dependent on having the one you uninstalled, and therefore will crash on start up since you don't have it anymore.

i do use mods, and I have uninstalled a few mods, but mainly just etc. things like retextures. the one major mod i did uninstall for a short period of time, moonpath to elsweyr, didn't seem to cause any problems.

i tried verifying the files, which didn't add back the tree textures, nor did it fixed the problem of crashing. i make sure to check if any of my mods need skse or anything before installing, so i'm pretty sure i'm ok on that front.

Any time you uninstall a texture pack you're risking not having any textures so you'll have purple items, but that doesn't explain the CTD.

Post your load order in a spoiler box and google "skyrim crash reporting" to figure out how to turn on crash reporting so we can see that too.

Yeah I was hoping that verifying would help with your textures but if you copied and pasted them manually and not via NMM or MO then there may be other issues.

Try disabling all of your mod plugins except for the official Skyrim ones:

Skyrim

Update

[Any DLCS you own here]

Then try to start the game up and see if it still crashes for you.

Then you can slowly activate them (one by one is preferable but I usually do three or so at a time) and then finally pinpoint which mod is causing the crash.

A load order would be preferable if you know how to find it and post it. I honestly can't remember but a quick google should help

someskyrimdork don't bump threads, the moderators don't allow it, I had a thread removed and received a warning about doing it again, just a friendly heads up is all

Below is a pic of how SKYui, SKYre, your bashed patch, and your reproccer files should look, this load order has not only worked for me, but has also worked for about 6 other people who I have helped.

If you're not using the reproccer then just ignore the above load order pic

Any time you have CTD's as much as you are reporting you should try all 3 programs in my siggy in the order I have them listed, works every time for anyone willing to follow the guidelines I have below

1) You need to run LOOT, Wrye Bash and TES5Edit, in that order

Loot is not 100% and if that is all you're using you're going to have many problems as you progress through your play through

1.5 ) with many mods loaded, you should be using 2 other programs ( Wrye Bash and TES5Edit ), when you run Wrye Bash if any checkmarks are not green, those mods are causing problems in your game, you make them turn green by dragging them up or down in your load order in wrye bash till they do turn green, ok that's one problem

2) with many mods loaded into your game you HAVE to have either a merged patch or bashed patch file, once again Wrye Bash is your friend because it will automatically make you a bashed patch file when it loads your mods. A bashed patch file makes all your weapon and armor and other mods play nice together, it also keeps track of leveled lists in the game and makes them work better together also. One other thing, make sure you enable ( check mark ) the bashed patch Wrye Bash makes, then right click it and choose rebuild patch as the one Wrye Bash makes is empty, which should always be last in your load order unless you're using an ENB or the Reproccer. DO NOT USE A MERGED PATCH AND A BASHED PATCH AT THE SAME TIME, ONE OR THE OTHER.

3) TES5EDIT is used to do 2 things,

(A) verify that your load order is not missing any files that your mods need and

(B) verify that no primary files are being loaded after secondary files. When you run TES5EDIT it will throw up an error box and the error will be displayed at the bottom of the right pane / panel. All you have to do is read what it says and it will tell you exactly how to fix the problem in Wrye Bash. Yes, you can open Wrye Bash while TES5EDIT is open so you don't even have to write down what the error is

Please remember that while LOOT is a great program it is NOT 100 %

- concerning what the red, orange, and green check marks mean

Red means a missing master file - basically a guaranteed CTD on startup. Orange means that some ESP has requested its master files in an order that is different to the the order that you currently have them in. Orange mods are arguably more dangerous, because you won't necessarily get an immediate CTD every time, so you may be lulled into a false sense of security, whereas in reality you have an unstable load order.

Clicking on the orange/red mods will show you what masters they have, and what order they want them in. From here on in, it becomes like a puzzle: you need to manually drag and drop the various masters in your load order until their order is harmonious ( IE:. you've managed to provide the desired order of master files for every single ESP in your list simultaneously ) and all of your oranges have disappeared. If it's not possible to eliminate all orange mods, you may need to ditch one or two mods/patches.

DO NOT USE AUTOSAVES AT ALL, NONE OF THEM - Autosaves will corrupt your game quicker than anything else. Personally I don't even use the quicksave. I make a hard save each and EVERY time.

You mentioned that you removed some mods during a playthrough, you should NEVER do that, especially texture mods. Doing that will not break the game, but it WILL break your save, each and every time. Adding mods is fine because nothing is being taken away, removing just one mod no matter how small it is can, and almost always will, corrupt your save file.

Let me know if you need anymore help

An orange check mark has nothing to do if a plugin has been altered or not, it is in fact an indicator that the mod is not placed correctly. You can verify what I am saying by selecting a mod that is orange in Wrye Bash and looking in the bottom right box and checking it's load order in that box. If both columns are not the exact same, then the mod is out of place, simple as that. Wrye bash checks the load order on the fly each and every time you move a mod in the load order with LOOT's masterlist. This is one reason why I always suggest using all 3 programs in my siggy.
