Hey guys, i have finally gotten my Oblivion, but since im new to the game, im stuck in so many areas. CAn i get some help?

1) Whats the sigil stone for when i completed an oblivion gate? When i use it to enchant a weapon, is it lost forever? If i use such a precious item to enchant a lousy item, it is not worth it is it?

2) I seem to always lose to enemies because my sword attacks are lousy, and i don't have any magic items to cast. How do i remedy that? (I have already tried my best to level up my skills)

3) I have 3 soul gems, 2 are empty and one is filled. And the ranks are petty and none. Whats all these mean and how can i make use of these gems?

Thanks guys.

1) Truth be told, the Sigil Stones are semi-precious. I find the only good use for them in enchanting apparel (armor, clothing, and jewelry). Using the stone on a weapon is a bit of a waste, since the stone only conveys one advertised effect (whereas a bona fide enchanter can mix and match multiple effects on a weapon, if there's enough skill and power for it). Since you can only shove a single effect on apparel in any case, the Sigil Stone allows you to enhance armor and jewelry without the use of a Soul Gem or an Altar of Enchanting.

The higher the level of your character is when he 'pulls the plug' on a Oblivion Gate, the more powerful the effects imparted by the Sigil Stone. A 'Descendant' Sigil Stone is the weakest. The 'Transcendant' Sigil Stone is the strongest. If you're gunning for the best, then any stone below 'Ascendant' is a throwaway.

And 'throwing away' a Sigil Stone can be a lucrative process. Vendors will not actually buy a Sigil Stone, but they'll buy anything enchanted by one. Try enchanting something relatively pricey (a nice set of clothes, armor, or whatnot) rather than a pair of Sack Cloth Pants.

Sigil Stones are a single-use item and disappears afterwards. Same deal with many stones you'll find.

The game levelling means it is too easy to find mosnsters and enemies levelling faster than you. Strategy is to put the skills you need for attack and defence and use frequently as minor skills so you can raise them without levelling.

Petty = worst

Lesser = not as bad

common = average

greater = better

grand = best

The type of soul gem = the type of soul you can capture in it.

I use umbra (the sword) that I found in an alyid ruin (can't remember which one) to trap souls, works pretty good.

Hey guys

I stolen a grand gem from one of the guild members :D

So having the umbra sword can i fill up the gems? Is there any other way i can fill up the gems? And do i have to 'equip' the gems, or i just kill with the sword and it automatically helps me fill the gems up?

and one more question, what does it mean to have my str agilty etc fortified?

By Criminey, how did your character ever make it out of the sewers alive?

Soul Trapping 101: the spell in question is called Soul Trap. Umbra is a sword that is enchanted to cast Soul Trap (rather wastefully, to be honest).

When it is cast upon an enemy, the spell makes their soul vulnerable to capture, if you happen to have an empty Soul Gem in your inventory that is big enough to fit their particular soul level. The Soul Trap spell doesn't affect the enemy in any other way, it simply 'tags' their soul for capture if you manage to kill them before the Soul Trap spell wears off.

The size of the soul gem determines the maximum size of the soul charge it can capture. A Petty Soul Gem can only capture a Petty-level soul, usually mud crabs or other weak critters. A Grand Soul Gem can hold any soul level up to Grand, but once it takes a soul, it is stuck with that particular soul. If the only gem you had on you was a Grand, and you used Soul Trap on a mud crab, that Grand Soul Gem will be carrying a Petty soul, and you cannot build up from that. Once the Petty soul got in the Grand Soul Gem, that soul gem will forever carry the 150 magicka points of a Petty soul (opposed to the 1600 points of a Grand Soul).

Mind you, humanoid characters (men, elves, orcs, Kahjit, Argonians, and Dremora) have souls that nomally are too big for even a Grand Soul gem. If you cast Soul Trap on a bandit while carrying a Grand SOul Gem, you will get a message that the soul was too big for any soul gem currently in your inventory (and thus the soul is lost for you).

and one more question, what does it mean to have my str agilty etc fortified?

Fortify: means that the particular attribute or skill is boosted, for as long as the Fortify effect is in play. If enchanted on an ring or armor, so long as you wear it, you get the boost. If it's a spell or potion, the boost lasts as long as indicated.

Drain: is actually the opposite of Fortify. While Fortify will increase your thing as long as it lasts, a Drain effect will lower that skill or attribute for as long as it lasts. Lots of people make the mistake of assuming that a "Drain 20 Health for 20 Seconds" means that Health is lowered 20 points every second for 20 seconds. That's incorrect: the Drain effect means that Health is lowered 20 points (and only those 20 points) for as long as 20 seconds, after which it returns to normal.

It is the "Damage" effect that will take off Health, Fatigue, or whatnot for as many points per second as indicated. "Damage 20 Health for 20 Seconds" means that 20 points per second (for 20 seconds) goes down, and stays down after the effect has passed.

"Restore" is the opposite of "Damage": it will bring back what is lost until you're 100% again.

''Once the Petty soul got in the Grand Soul Gem, that soul gem will forever carry the 150 magicka points of a Petty soul (opposed to the 1600 points of a Grand Soul).''

If you trap a soul in the gem, cant u just empty it by using the soul in it? Then after using it, it wil just be empty again and let you trap a '1600 point' into it again? Or its just forever stuck at the first soul point you fill it with?

Okay a few things here:

About soul gems: From a point foreward you will gain black soul gems. These are like grand soul gems with the exception that they can trap souls of humans elves etc. To empty a soul gem without azuras star is impossible. Unless of course you get to use a mod. There are a few mods that allow you to empty soul gems. However ths does not belong to this thread unless you ask. Oh and one good stratefy for soul trapping: If you get to make your own spells make one that soul traps the victim and deals ome minor damage after that. Use this spell to end fights only as it will be weaker than moost of your other spells.

About fighting: How do you fight? if you have a bow do not attack in melee range. In such cases get your sword/axe or even bare hands out. Also I have found out that the easiest weapons to use in the begining are two handed ones, like claymores. They deal the most damage although they are slower. Later on the sword type will not make much of a difference so you will use a weapon better suited to your likings. If the game is still too dificult to play, try lowering the difficulty.

One last advice get to a gild as fast as possible. Reason: they will give you many assignments that will allow you to improve your skills and thus your level.

To malchic: I disagree with the point about putting combat heavy skills as minors. The problem is that in the end the character himslef will not levelup either so his HP and magicka will be low. This means that even if you get say Destruction 100 many spells you will be unable to use due to the low magicka you will possess.
