Adding more variety to oblivion voices without new voiceovers

So, yesterday i saw my brother play with the voice changer on his DSi and i got an idea... Would it be possible to run some oblivion speech files trough some kind of voice altering software to make it sound different then attach them to some NPC's , ergo adding more variety to the NPC voices. I think that would result in a nice immersion-boosting mod. How hard would it be to pull this of from a technical standpoint?

It probably wouldn't be hard from a technical point of view, but I wouldn't know since I never used voice altering software. I think it would be hard to find free software (and virus free, trustable software that doesnt make your computer crash for free is pretty rare, thanks god for gimp, nifskope & blender). Also, getting the results you want might be hard - most voice altering software focusses on robot voices and stuff. I think from that point of view, you might get better results by requesting voice actors. Most can do multiple voices, so you could try to give each NPC in Cyrodiil their own voice (if you do not count enemies and NPC). But, do renember, there are thousands of spoken lines in your voices bsa , and they all have the most unlogical names you can think off (it was made by Bethesda, ofcourse the had to name it something like HighElfFvoice001011101). If you are running a line that previously only had 1 voice by 3 voice actors for more difference, you'll also need knowledge of the dialogue system - but that is pretty easy, dont worry about that.

Also, the file size of the complete might be a very big file - too big to upload in one piece.

And renember to convert the files to their correct filetype - I think it was called wav or something, but I am probably wrong.

Good luck with your mod, I'd like to see this one.

If you're looking for easy pitch shifting and other simple sound editing effects, Audacity is your best bet for a free way to go about doing this. There are other programs out there that could probably do it better if you've got the know-how, but it's definitely the best free to use sound editing software around.

I'm scared of what'd happen if someone used a low-quality voice changer. Imagine if all the female elves started sounding like GLaDOS.. Actually, that'd be kind of cool.

Would Audacity work on your own voice as well?
