chaospearl
I am seriously starting to hate the Construction Set. I've been working on a custom CM Companion. Trying to get the face just right. I even posted in another topic asking a question about it, less than 20 minutes ago. Suddenly out of nowhere, the CS crashed while I was editing my NPC's face. And now, every single time I open an NPC and click the Face tab, it immediately freezes and crashes. It doesn't matter which NPC or which mod. I tried vanilla NPCs, mod NPCs, I even tried not loading anything at all and clicking on Player in the NPC section (it's the only thing that shows up when you open a fresh CS window and don't load anything, not even Oblivion.esm). CRASH! I uninstalled and then reinstalled the CS. Didn't help. No matter what I do, any time I click that Face tab in the NPC window no matter what is loaded or what's not, the CS will immediately crash and burn. I'm at the end of my rope here! Somebody please tell me this is a known issue and there's a way to fix it. Please?

Restart and before you do ANYTHING else, empty your Temp folders in Windows Explorer. Try the CS again, and see if you still get the crashing. DavidBudreck
This is one of thoes things... You need to click the Preview Head check box, THEN click on the face tab. If you click on the face tab without the preview first, you'll CTD every time.

chaospearl
Yes, as Hickory states. The "preview head" box is already checked automatically when I click on an NPC to open that window, before I've clicked any tabs. Let me try the cold boot. I tried a regular restart but didn't turn the machine completely off.
David Brasher
There is a known bug where the CS will become destabilized and headed for a crash if you open the face preview. If you open the full body preview first, and then open the face preview, there are no problems, but do it in the wrong order and it will almost certainly crash. What is the source of this "known bug"? I have used the CS for years and have never come across such a scenario, and I'm sure if a crash was a 'certainty', thousands upon thousands of modders would have been screaming for a patch. chaospearl
For what it's worth, I've managed to get it working again... sorta. I uninstalled the CS completely. Turned off the computer. Left it off for about 5 - 10 minutes while I made lunch. Turned it back on. Downloaded a fresh copy of the CS from Bethsoft (just in case) and installed it. Seems to be working for the most part. Now when I click on an NPC to open that window, the Preview checkboxes are blank -- before when I was having crashes, the Preview Head box was always automatically checked. However, when I'm working with NPC faces in the CS for a prolonged time (like say opening the face edit tab repeatedly every few minutes for an hour) every so often it happens again. I'll be going along fine, careful to always check Preview Head before I click the face tab, then... out of nowhere I'll click an NPC -- the same NPC I've clicked a dozen times already and had no problem -- and notice the box is already checked for me. And when that happens, BAM. I'm back to instant-crash the moment I click the face tab. The only way to get it working again is to uninstall the CS, reboot my machine, and then reinstall the CS. It's hella annoying, but at least it only happens once every few hours and I'm nearly done tweaking my NPC. The CS just plain doesn't like it when I open the NPC window repeatedly again and again, it seems. POS.

That makes me wonder if it's an issue between the CS and your graphics card and/or drivers -- or even RAM? Flaky drivers and/or RAM might produce something like that.
