Low FPS Max Settings on a 5770

I recently purchased a Sapphire Radeon 5770 because I've basically heard testimony that yes, it will run Oblivion at max settings on high resolutions. Just be to safer, I lowered the resolution to one that fit with my monitors default 16:10 ratio.

Resolution: 1280x800

Everything maxed. HDR, no AA.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 @ 2.5 GHz

4 GB DDR2 RAM

1 GB Radeon 5770

500 GB WD Blue Caviar 7200 RPM hard drive.

However, I'm peaking at around 35 FPS with V.sync off in Anvil facing towards the Fighter's guild under the tree. Even after going through the tweaks for dual core and having more things load in the background when entering an area (Same results with the default Oblivion INI).

Tuning Oblivion - http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/?page=tuning_oblivion <-- be sure to see the "Related" links at the bottom

Why do you have Low Poly Grass and Short Grass installed at the same time? Why do you think your FPS is GPU-related? Have you tried lowering the object load distance slider?

Edit: Oh, I did not see that you were talking about in cities. Oblivion is CPU-intensive, and cities are the worst because of high concentrations of AI packages and scripts, attached to all of the NPCs. 35 is fine.

Edit: Increasing/decreasing your screen resolution probably does not have much affect on that performance, I would imagine.

Even outdoors, this rig is having a hard time keeping a steady framerate. Walking from Roxey Inn back to Vilverin, following the path, my FPS is going from 29 to 89 with an average of about 59.

You were right about the changing the resolution. Sliding all the way down to the pathetic 640x480 gave me about the same framerates.

Got the 1GB 5770. No performance drop whatsoever, it's amazing  Perty hehe 1920x1200, 4xAA, 4xAF, and I'm still getting the same FPS (45-60+ outdoors) I was getting when I had ATP texture packs installed :D

Really shouldn't have too many issues with the meshes...I'm on a 3.2GHz dual core and there's no studder at all...it's just nuts lol.

This is the quote that had me thinking I should expect more from my pc. Granted, I don't know their full mod list or their ini settings, but I guess its time to tweak and tweak.

The guy you're quoting is running a 3.2Ghz CPU. You're running a 2.5Ghz. That's the difference, from what I've experienced. It very likely isn't a graphics related problem, it's a CPU problem. As Tomlong said, Oblivion is seriously CPU intensive. I've got a Radeon 5870 with 2GB and I'm lucky when my FPS maintains at 20 or more in cities. Because I have so many quest mods and other AI-adding stuff that my poor 2.8GHz CPU chokes when I'm near lots of NPCs. There's not really much help for it besides maybe overclocking, but you don't wanna go there unless you know what you're doing.

Personally? I wouldn't consider 29+ FPS a problem. In my game I don't really notice a slowdown until I drop under 15 FPS... anything higher than that appears smooth to my eye. If I didn't use FRAPS I'd never know that my FPS sometimes jumps between 5-10 in the center of a crowded city and 65+ a few cells over near the gate.

If it's the rapidfire stuttering between 30-ish and 80-ish that's annoying you, try using Streamline and\or Oblivion Stutter Remover. You can set your FPS to cap at a certain rate and stay between 25 and 35 or something like that, if you want.

lady ;) And yes...running a 3.2GHz dual...which was originally at 2.6GHz. Did notice a bit of a jump...should of checked how it was before I installed QTPIII :P

with QTPIII, Improved Trees and Flora, high texture creatures, IFT with high resolution face textures on that, Improved Meats and Veggies, and others I've forgotten about lol.

Don't use too much :P Don't use many AI changing mods. But .ini is tweaked accordingly, also use the FO3 RAM boost (which works for Oblivion and many other games). Load order is sorted with BOSS, use Wrye Bash (gotta love the Bashed Patch :D). I don't use Streamline or any other studder/FPS fixers. I don't have a bazillion things running in the background while I'm playing...just whatever Windows uses.

Even though I have a dual core and you have a quad core, Oblivion is not multi-threaded and only uses one of the cores....and I'm using one old school dual core...90nm AMD 5200+...ah the good old Windsor :) 2MB of Level 2 cache...ohhh yeah :P haha

I still get lower FPS in cities...25-40FPS when there's a lot of NPCs around...depends. Like Tomlong said, it's normal :)

You'll never get a steady framerate unless you run Streamline or something that caps the FPS. I just don't find it annoying that it spikes from 45-100+ outdoors, just something ya deal with ;) I'm just happy it looks great and runs great :)

Overclock that stinker haha ;) Well...lol, don't if you don't know how to or have a lower end/cheap motherboard. Getting up past 3 GHz seems to do a heck of a lot for games, and for Windows in general.

Having a sound card as well generally improved performance (not as much studdering around NPCs or in battles) for me as well. Onboard uses CPU...so less strain on it.

It's a good card hun ;) Not the godliest of the godlies...but very very nice. Had to test it with Crysis of course lol...did the benchmark, 1920x1200, 4xAA, 4xAF, all max for DX9, high sound quality...averaged 35FPS...I say that's not too bad :D Not all games are the same...Oblivion is Oblivion, Crysis is Crysis.

Rather interesting article
