Dang, I wish I could figure out getting inventory editor to work. I can't figure out how to get my hands on some TNT myself, even with enemies turned on (The creepers always explode and don't drop anything). I used to find some in the mini-dungeons, but there's not any chests in the ones I do find.

And I say its nothing special, because I've just been reading threads like this one. Its slightly scary how much effort some people put into their creations...

Some of those buildings are done within the earlier versions of the program where you could just build and destroy whatever. It becomes a different matter when you have to harvest all the blocks you're placing.

The trick of using cacti is to put them on corners of buildings

and have a roof which extends over the cactus with a ladder that leads up to the roof from inside. Things which are trying to kill you will try to follow you along the wall, come to the corner, and get stuck on the cactus. It can also be used in conjunction with a drowning/collection pit.

Which can, in turn be tied in with the rest of your base with the inclusion of an above-ground walkway.

I didn't invent the pit design, I just changed it a bit and made it better for dealing with things like spiders.

What editor are you using? I couldn't get some to work, but I've found INVedit works easily and has a nice look to it.

INVEdit

Terminator, that towers amazing. Shame you used an inventory editor. I'm trying to build a tower the honest way, and it's taking ages.

Oh, and Vagrant, I'm going to try out your method of cacti trap. It seems like it will work.

It wouldn't let me see them as well.

And thanks! There was a guy on the Minecraft Forums who had a signature that was funny, so I took his idea and changed it a bit.

How can one efficiently build an aboveground walkway? I haven't been able to build on tiles facing away from me, so I ended up just having to build huge sets of scaffolding so I could reach around the place.

Ah-ha! That inventory editor works! This world is going to burn.

Try edging just a little off the tile. You should be able to see some of the side. Just click there. It's probably faster to build scaffolding though...

That castle may have been built using the classic minecraft, but that only saves a little bit of time over the new version with an inventory editor. Especially if you use the trick of setting the quantites of blocks to 255, which effectively gives you infinite blocks.

As for building bridges etc - I normally stand right on the edge and look down, and this usually allows me to stick a block to the end. It's a slow process though, and you're likely to fall off. Scaffolding would be better if it isn't too high up.

ub3r: There are two buttons, 'Open from world...' and 'Save to world...' which can be used to load and save inventories from saved games. The .inv files are just for use in invedit - so you can save inventories independently from saved games.

Awesome! That worked! I'll see if I can capture some pictures of the explosion from atop my mountain. I think I'll be able to just rig up some redstone for the job. Or flaming arrows.

Edit: Okay, I need some help now.. I've got the minefield set up.

But I can't figure out how to detonate it without killing myself. I was thinking of a redstone circuit, but that apparently only goes 15 tiles then the signal stops. I tried experimenting with wood and a lighter, but then the fuse would take ten minutes to go off and it's rather unpredictable. If possible, I'd love to be able to watch the explosion from atop my tower, but I've also set up a vertical shaft in the air nearby to the explosion with a ladder on it.

Here's the vantage points I can use.
