Morrowind overrated?!?

Morrowind is there, but Dungeon Siege isn't in the top three? Quake II is there, and being called worse than Quake, with only "slight improvements" in the single-player mode?

That's it, I'm going to line up fifty bombards just outside the Gamespy office and throw down Donkey Kong-esque barrels of gunpowder from a biplane until everybody who wrote a derogatory comment on Morrowind in that feature crawls out of said office, at which point I will jump from said biplane with a katana in my mouth, ordering said bombards to pump large spheres of Lead into said office just before realizing how far my various bodily tissues will spread when said tissues hit the street...

Of course almost worse than Morrowind is their listing of Starfleet Command as overrated, too slow and boring. This from the same people who objected to Homeworld II being "too hard, even on easy" (ai on easy is a complete joke). Perhaps anything more than counterstrike is too complicated for them to understand? Seriously, these people can't recognize good games at all it seems. I think comrade AK-47 and I need to go have a little "discussion" with a few of them!

Marxist, may I suggest that you equip said plane with a parachute? This simple device, recently discovered, may inhibit said tissues, including but not exclusive to organs, vessels, and fluids, from splattering on said pavement. May I also suggest that several large trebuchets be included in the aforementioned seige? I have just seen a special on these machines on the History Channel and find them quite appealing. Hurling pianos and dead cows with into the building would not be above these machines capabilities.

That said, Morrowind is an excellent game. How can something that provides hours of nonlinear personalized gameplay be overrated? Those people at Gamespy are hacks.

I like how the critics try to keep realistic in their judgements of games, but I think I agree with everyone else's opions on Morrowind.

Of COURSE the game becomes more familiar AFTER you spend some 24+ hours playing it! Every game, whether XBox, Playstation, or whatnot has only a certain about of data it can contain in a disk; meaning that, inheriently, ANY game may have to use a standard model or set of phrases for characters. In the case of Morrowind, I argue, it's AMAZING that they made it so flexible in the first place, hence WHY thousands, if not millions, of gamers were so dazzled by it then AND now!

A few games, such as Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic as an example, come close to having a beautiful enviorment and perhaps a few specially designed NPCs, but the flexibility I see is distinctly limited - at most maybe 1 or 2 side-quests in a verrry confined area. Morrowind...poof! You can go in any direction you wish, LEAVE quests unfinished if you choose or literally chose a different route in short. The only remotely comparable games in such flexibility might be Final Fantasy (specifically FFX) but apart from the super-digital-high-quality vid movies they have, their visual quality is okay, but not as thorough as Morrowind. Everything has a trade-off, and altogether Morrowind managed to acheive the most with the least amount of trade-off.

Hey, everyone has their favs and opinions...mine are all good regarding Morrowind.

:D ;)

ROFL. well they complain about all the bugs but did they spend 5 minutes looking on message boards like this one?? got tons of tips here that'll get morrowind to work on just about any machine (besides of course a 486 and really ridiculously low spec ones :P).

these guys r just like my m8, he literally played it thru 2 the so called "end", decided it was cr@p and threw it away, not even bothering 2 find out how deep the game really was  and, funnily enuf, he DOES play counter-strike an awful lot peregrine!

Simpe minded critics tend to like simple-minded gameplay and low brow art. Case in point, my previous roomate was simple minded; He liked 8-bit sports games and thought Jar Jar was a nice addition to Star Wars. Alas, I fear even Counter Strike would be too difficult for his simple brain to understand, what with the circle-strafing and all. Morrowind does have it's limitations, but it has set some higher standards in the RPG market and provides a lot of entertainment for it's price.

And to MB: Your mention of Dungeon Seige couldn't be more right. Talk about a hyped game that looked good, and was about as fun as walking on glass.

Yup... I still remember bits and pieces of Dungeon Siege -- especially how I was so amazed at how the designers claimed there were no load times. However, as those who are familiar with he game know, that statement is more or less false. Going into a multiplayer game required an astronomical load time, and even when that time had passed, you would often find yourself walking around a landscape that hadn't been loaded yet... Same thing with fast travel -- instead of having a simple load screen blink past, you had to wait through the load process while your charachter was actually vulnerable to attack, and the area immediately around you still hadn't loaded after the FPS went back to a reasonable level.

And even after the developers made the game Quake-like in terms of complexity and plot (actually, probably sub-Quake -- Quake actually had ammunition management and replayability) because they think that not regenerating your health back in two seconds just isn't "fun," all the major publications kept on eating it, saying that it just might not be complex enough for a serious RPG player.

Also worth mentioning is that Dungeon Siege was the first application to BSOD my second Windows 2000 install.
