Custom BOSS Masterlist

First of all, I would like to avoid having to edit the masterlist.txt at all in the first place. Obviously I would make a backup in case I mess something up, but anyway...

1) Is there a way to "Lock" the position of a group of mod load orders? For example, always have Supreme Magicka and all of its ESP files, including LAME's Conjuration for SM esp, load directly after all the LAME ESPs?

It's gotten to the point where I use so many obscure mods that I have to manually sort them every time. Example being move around SM, Deadly Reflex 5+SM plugin, Golden Saint and Dark Seducer Gear shop plugin, CuteElf11 portal bug-fix, DK High Imperial race mod, etc...

2) If there is no way to lock the position of where mod's load (Not their load#, rather where in relation to other mods) then should I just edit my masterlist.txt? Do other people usually do this?

If you are not installing dozens of new mods every day/week, editing the masterlist is by far the best way. You can, though, use Wrye Bash or OBMM to export/import your load order.

I wouldn't say dozens.. But I do like to try out different mods..often.. I can spend more time browsing new mods than actually playing my main file!

Editing the masterlist is incredibly simple and not at all potentially-screw-things-up dangerous. It's just a plain text file with a long list of mods. All you need to do is Ctrl+F to find the mods you want to move to a different position, then cut & paste them into whichever position you want.

If you need to add a mod that isn't on the list, just, well, add it. Find the place within the list that you want the mod to be sorted to, and add in the name of the esp file. That's it. Though it would be helpful for the community if, when you come across a mod that's not on the list, you could go to the BOSS thread on the Bethsoft forums and post the name of the mod. The BOSS team is lightning fast in adding new mods to the official master list.

If you accidentally put something in the wrong place, just fix it. We're talking a text file here. If you're really worried, make a backup copy of the file before you begin editing so you'll have a reference if you mess up and forget which order the mods were originally in.

If you have Microsoft Word (Open Office does not work with this) you can download and use BOSS Master List Manager.

Tried out BOMM. Didn't like it at all. Much easier just to edit the text file myself, imo anyway. Thank you though!

I do have one question.. I go and use BOSS, and it now only has one unrecognized file... "ZOMBIES! - 28 days and a bit V2.esp"

Okay, no problem. Open up masterlist.txt, search for quests xyz...wait...it's there. Exactly as it is in my load order: "ZOMBIES! - 28 days and a bit V2.esp"... Any idea why BOSS isn't recognizing this load group? I guess I could just go add it in with some other quests, seeing as it simply loads "quest" type mods alphabetically.

I just tested this by copying an esp and renaming it to ZOMBIES! - 28 days and a bit V2.esp and ran BOSS. It recognised it, and placed it correctly. You haven't put it in your masterlist manually, and retained the quote marks, by any chance? Another thing to check (unlikely, but worth checking): make sure the zombies file is not set to read-only.

Well, I figured it out. It was really dumb to be honest. I opened up my Oblivion\Data folder, checked, and saw the .esp was NOT read-only. So I looked a little closer, and there was a second space between the hyphen and '2' in the name.

Really dumb, and have no idea how that even happened as I rarely manually install mods.

Anyway, thanks for all the help!

I'm glad you got it sorted, and you're welcome.
