Crashes, Freezes and stuff

So, uh... firstly i want to say hi. It's my first post on Nexus Forums, but i'm using this site as my source of mods for pretty long time.

Secondly i want to say sorry in advance for my bad english, but i hope there will be no problem in communication.

So...

I guess that problem is rather popular. Crashes, Freezes and problems like that. Generally unstable game with a lot of mods. Before i'll specify the problem, i'll give you my load order from NMM.

So, my first problem was game crash just before main menu, at startup. I used FNVEdit, did some cleaning and it worked. Menu needs like 40 seconds of loading, but it's working. Next one - i couldn't quit Doc Mitchell's House. There was loading, looong loading. Freezed one, task manager was only escape. After many tries i disabled A World of Pain (AWOP) and that little add-ons for Nevada Skies (Western and Darker Nights). And... it worked. I get out of my house, many pop-ups from DLC's, mods and stuff. Then, my FPS dropped to like 10-20. And, after a while game Freezed. I loaded save and i tried to look at the wall with 60 FPS until all pop-ups are gone. That didn't help, it freezed, just a little later than before. And now i'm here, asking for help, because i don't know what to do. I'm newb at modding. I have NVSE, NVAC FNVEdit, BOSS and FNV4GB but i guess it's not enough. Can someone help me to run a game with at least majority of these mods? If it's possible to play even with AWOP i'll be really happy. So, that's it. Thanks in advance...

That's a lot of mods - around 90 active plugins. This may simply be a case of the engine overloading.

You didn't install all of these in one go before playing the game, right? You need a stable, working game that you can launch and play before you start adding mods and even then you only add them in small batches, preferably 1-3 at a time. Adding everything at once makes troubleshooting nigh impossible.

It could also potentially be some conflict, but I'm not familiar enough with these mods to give any specific input as to what that might be.

You may have luck with utilities like 4GB or NVAC. Otherwise try to cut down on the number of mods.

I'll share the 'discovery' I made yesterday so's you can all have a laugh at my expense and as a general warning not to take things for granted. I use quite an old machine with Win XP that is (I thought) showing it's age. Even with 4Gig exe it could lock up and needed the Anti-Stagger to play at all well.

Yesterday, after a particularly annoying series of GECK crashes I was poking around the System folder and found a file called ntoskrnl.exe.

Which means the machine has been running on one processor for.. better part of a year and I hadn't noticed! Or rather I mis-attributed the all the problems to the age of machine.

Lols, well that literally fills in a few gaps.....

I have 4GB and NVAC. And sadly, i made the mistake of installing everything at once. Of course i can deactivate all of them and try to activate few at a time, seeking for one casing the problem. But i'm afraid that it will force me to start a new game after every mod (Although i'm not sure).

But... do i need to completely uninstall mods, or simply deactivate them and activate in small batches?

Sorry for double-posting, but i followed the instructions in one of problem threads about Out of Memory crash and i installed New Vegas Stutter Remover. All of that improved my performance from 20 FPS to min. 45 FPS. I rid off crashes caused by "out of memory" too. But game is still crashing after twenty seconds, so it's not enough. I think about disabling some mods, but some people have over 100 mods with almost perfectly stable game, while my ~60 are causing crashes. Now the only crashes are that when freeze occurs and task manager tags New Vegas as not responding.

It's not purely the number of the mods friend, its the size and complexity against your system's specifications. Someone will correct me if I'm mistaken here but I think you could load a hundred gun mods because they are just weapons they are hardly any burden to the game. But you have huge broad game changing mods, lot and lots of them. All of Project Nevada, All of Adam, all of Bounties, all of AWOP all of NevadaSkies and all of WMX...

Try turning some of them off guy, you must be dimming the street lights when you power up your machine.

I am playing an extremely stable FNV, 123 plugins with 111 active. The others tied into the Bash patch. Also using NMC Large texture packs, New Vegas Redesigned, Project Nevada, AWOP, Project Reality, New Vegas Bounties and some other texture mods. I average 35-45 fps(better fps in Interiors), not the greatest, but I can enjoy the game just fine.

I don't see a Wrye Bash patch in your list. With Oblivion, FO3, FNV and Skyrim, I use a Bash patch with each. I like the tweaking I can do with it.

As Ladez recommended, install a couple mods at a time and stress test for stability. I do this for each of these heavily modded Bethesda games. The stress test I like doing is opening up the console and putting your character into God Mode, upping your movement speed and run around the game map and making multiple interior/exterior transitions. Then I will take my character off God Mode and do some battling. Before I do this though, I get through the tutorials and make a few fresh saves.

With New Vegas, I installed my mods a couple at a time without NVAC installed. Then added NVAC at the very last for extra stability. If a plugin crashes my game without NVAC installed, I don't use it.(New Vegas Rebuilt mod being a plugin that does this). The other thing I did after I finished installing my mods was to verify the integrity of game cache through Steam. It fixed a couple files.

So it might be tedious and a bit of a pain, but try starting with a fresh install. Make sure that is stable and works, then start adding mods a few at a time. Also, carefully check mod author's readme and descriptions for Mod Conflicts, Compatibility Patches, etc.

I really don't want to do a fresh install. My internet connection is lame and downloading NV from Steam will take forever. Plus, starting new game after adding every 2 mods is rather painful too. But i've got a question, will Wrye Bash patch work with FNVEdit Merge Patch? Can i download it now and try to do something with it?

Ah man that sucks you would have to download the game again. I am still kind of an old fashioned gamer, still like to have a physical disc copy of games. But with some of the newer games like Skyrim and Bioshock Infinite, even with the game disc, install still wants to download from Steam. Have to force it to install from the disc.

I have used the Bash patch merged into the FNVEdit merge patch before and it worked. But right now, I am not playing with a FNVEdit merge patch, just the Bash patch. Game is playing great.

As far as testing your mods a couple at a time, you don't need to start a new game each time. Just install FNV and the DLC, get through the Doc Mitchell beginning and create your character, then save. From there you can add a few plugins at a time and load that save. Then stress test to make sure your load order is stable.

Gopher on Youtube has a series of excellent mod install tutorials for FNV. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-3c1a9cLL8

Another install method to look into is Mod Organizer After I finish my current playthough of Skyrim, I am going to do a fresh install and go the Mod Organizer route with Skyrim. Also a series of install tutorials on Youtube by Gopher, Mod Organizer

Even though I had quite a bit of experience installing mods for Morrowind, Oblivion, FO3, Skyrim and other games, i found his videos very helpful.
