Need help/tutorial for rigging new armor in 3ds Max 2010

So I recently changed the marine armor from Doom 3 to fit the Fallout 3 skeleton, and now I'm stuck on rigging. I tried just adding the Skin modifier and attaching all the bones, but that just gives an error with exporting:

 

"You have attempted to add a child to a NiNode which is already the child of another NiNode."

 

Then I tried exporting it as an .obj, and converting it into a .nif in NifSkope, but once I added it in the GECK I got this:

 

"MASTERFILE: (BSStream Error) NIF BSversion is too old in armor\ArmorMarsPower\dm3mesh.nif"

 

I've looked around for tutorials, but the few Max tutorials I've found are for 9, which has a different layout. Here is a screenshot of the mesh:

Any help would be appreciated.

it's not s different layout at all. It is 99% identical.

 

and 100% identical in terms of setting up the skin modifier, and nitools export settings.
