LFact
Huh? You might be confusing the Oblivion expansion system with DA:O's. The way expansions work in Oblivion is that once they're installed, you'll get a little message prompting you to go somewhere, which you can ignore and go on your merry way, or go to the place and start the quest. You're able to go back to Cyrodiil from SI any time you want, I believe. Now I'm confused it doesn't take much in your opinion is it best played as a stand alone, it does sound like it or does it add to the main game experience if I install it half way through? You hit the nail on the head and that was the reason I asked the question. DAO is the first game I've ever played where the DLC such as Wardens Peak can be played as if it is part of the main game. I know that they can be played after killing the AD, but I never liked that as the PCs who left are all still there, to me that never made sense. SI main quest line is separated from Oblivion main quest line. You can do it at any time once SI is installed. You can do it before doing Oblivion main quest, or in the middle of doing main quest, or after finishing main quest.
ell46
Thanks in that case I will finish the main quest and then do SI.
BlackerrR
I like to enter Shivering Isles after 30th level, when I become strong, when I gather good equipment and learn a of spells, since these things are very rare in SI, unfortunately. Also, it's fun, because I find Shivering Isles' enemies stronger than they are in Tamriel, which makes it more challenging.
woodtortiose
You can install SI at any time, I install it right when I first install Oblivion. SI adds a new worldspace and questline, that you can access at anytime from the Oblivion worldspace. You can move back and forth freely from one to the other anytime you want. If playing for the first time, I would recommend finishing the main questline before starting the SI questline, though you dont have to wait to INSTALL SI. Its very freeform. You can start the SI questline, go back to Cyrodil for a while, then finish the Si questline. Whatever you want.
ell46
Thanks everyone for all the advice, as I'm very much a creature of moods and the game has arrived depending how I feel I might install before I've played through and I might not, knowing me it will probably be before the end of this game. woodtortoise - I have played Oblivion before I bought it when it was first released, but only did 1 play through so it's been a veeeeeeery long time. I'm enjoying it as I can't remember very much or at least not until things are about to happen and I didn't even know they had made expansions for it, back then they must have been quite a new idea.
